need help with getting my car running, is this the problem?

My car hasn't been running for about a month. I go to college out of state so I don't really get to mess with it much. A friend and I were able to get the car running when we held the AFM flap open somewhat, but without that help it dies. If we rev it some when holding the flap in, it gets really weak. My dad took it to a shop owned by a friend of his and the guy said something about the top and bottom missing from the ACV.... But I was told by somoene before that the car doesn't require this to run. Could it be causing the problem? Or is he wrong about that being it, and should I stop him from getting one for it?

Thanks.

OH. Also my car is a 1987 T2.

You don't have nearly enough information in this post to allow anyone to give a detailed answer, but if part of the ACV is not connected it could cause a vaccume leak which would cause a problem like you are discribing. I would just plug off whatever is open and see if it will work.

If you can get the car up to operating temp then you might be able to get it to idle good enough to look around and find the leak better.

Post a pic and you might get more responses.

That's all I was told right now. He said something about it missing 2 parts and something about the top and bottom of it. When I was told before by someone that the ACV wasn't needed for the car to run.... Was that actually meant as... it's not needed, but if it isn't plugged up, it won't run?

The ACV is used for emmissions control... it can be removed and the engine will run fine as long as all vaccume lines that were associated with it are plugged off. If the lines aren't plugged you'll have a vaccume leak and the car won't run good.
