Definitive Rats Nest Post
OK, I am not looking for directions on doing this anymore. I simply want to know what the outcomes of doing this is. I was originally interested in cleaning up my engine bay, and simplifying my engine setup so that tuning, adjusting, working, and troubleshooting would be easier. What problems can I expect to get when doing this? What are the pro's to removing it?
Does the removal of the rats nets mean I can disconnect the damn air pump? Should my idle be smoother? Just list all the problems/solutions you found when you removed yours.

Oil filler neck condensation...still haven't fixed it. Lost one of the vacuum caps once car ran like ****. Oh yeah, taking the rat's nest off without an ACV plate is not a good idea. Now that's a shitty idle, it sat around 1500 RPM and spit blue fireballs every few seconds. Get a plate or make yourself one.

OK, Oil filler neck condensation... what's that going to do besides rust?
And ACV plate... where does that go, and what's it doing?
And I will have a shitty idle once I have removed the rats nest and installed the ACV plate? Hmm

Had a feeling you were still here. Yeah rust, big deal. I've had mine out since the end of summer, and it's barely started to rust. Well once the air pump is gone (I'm assuming you don't have cats) and you pull off the the Air Control and Check Valve and install the plate, everything is good to go. The car runs great without the nest, I lost all the popping in my exhaust. It used to pop 4-6 times while gearing down, a bunch of small ones a one decent sized one that you know wxactly when it's gonna blow. Now pretty much nothing, I do however still get pretty flames when I put my foot into it and play around at highway speeds. Some friends behind me the othe night said one of the flames lasted nearly 5 seconds!!!!! It's great on dark backroads when it lights up the entire rear view mirror. I miss being able to shoot flames in neutral, but it sounds much smoother and the revs drop a bit quicker between shifts. I like it.

I simply want my car to run better and be more reliable... do you think that removal of the rats nest is a good idea? Also, my exhaust is stock. Cats, headers, muffler.... all stock. Tell me what you think?

When you remove the air pump you will need to replace the alt. pulley with a double sheaved one, and add a belt. Otherwise you will get squealing from your alt. belt, and eventual failure. When you go to buy the belts make sure the parts guy gets you a "matched" set of belts.
If you remove the rat's nest I believe that you will also loose the ac idle adjustment. That raises the idle of your engine when you turn on the ac.

My AC idle adjustment doesn't work anyway... sucks!
So the air pump pumps fresh cold air into the exhaust to cool the super hot exhaust coming from the engine?

When I ran the Nikki carb I removed all emissions gear and had no problems whatsoever; putting a small air filter on the filler neck eliminated all condensation and there were no starting/driveability issues or anything like that. I have a feeling that those who complain of problems once they've done this have made some mistake or other.

Silver Rocket, can you please post some detailed pix on here, or send them to me codyb81@yahoo.com
Also, where did you find the air filter for the oil neck? I am assuming this let the hot or cold out of the neck so that condensation didn't occur...
I want to make sure that I do this mod pefectly... some detailed pictures showing plugs, lines, and stuff would really be nice to have. Thanks.

Sorry hombre, no pics cause that carb is in a box at my parent's house (I have a Dellorto now) ...
Lots of people have written about this on here and mazspeed - do your research and you won't have any problems. It's a pretty simple job.
The air filter is called a "breather" filter, I found it at a local auto parts store. Should be a pretty common item. It looks like a small K&N filter with a rubber inlet that you clamp over the oil filler nipple.
Incidentally, didn't you say your car was totally stock, exhaust and all? If that's the case, I'd leave the nest in place and focus my efforts elsewhere, but that's just me.

Yeah, exhaust is pretty much a prerequisite to getting much extra power out of these cars... also by far the best bang for the buck. I'd deal with that before anything else.
Sorry dude, I'm keeping my old carb around in case I ever need to run it again for some reason. If you need a used Nikki though, I'm sure you won't have any trouble locating one.
