whining from under hood ?
whining from under hood ?
well i remember reading some threads on a whine that comes from under the hood area and now my car is doing it,
it used to do it every once and a while just when i shut it off it would let out a little whine
now just today when i fired it up it would let out a whine every once and a while when i was feathering the gas because it was a cold start
it almost reminds me of when my water pump went in my second gen but temps are fine
its like a belt whine but much lower tone,
not that high pitched squel
lmk if any ideas

That or an alternator bearing is all I can think of.

ok after driving it for the day i can go a little more into detail,
here it is
if i let the car idle after a short while it will make the whine noise and die,
so even while stopped i have to hold the tach at 1,500
if i let it down below that it will whine and die
it doesnt whine for a while,
instead its a short whine that only last a second and it dies right when the whine starts
almost like it just lost all vacume or like someone cut the spark or fuel
so im guessing its one of the three
while under throttle it responds the same,
but if i try to coast at say 40 mph it will start stuttering and jerking every once and a while,
but once i tap the gas down its fine ?????
any help would be great,
i think its either
fuel
spark
vacume
all which i have never had a problem with before
so im clueless

Sounds like a shutter valve to me
. Its supposed to close off the primary to the rear rotor when decelerating. If it stops working, the carb will let too much fuel into the engine and "flood" it out basically. I think...

now that sounds possible,
its just like the huge vacume thingy on the carb that when i unplug it stumbles hard like i yanked a spark plug wire then it dies,
only it makes this damn noise when it does it
the noise is kinda loud,
i can hear it from in the car with the windows up,
but its hard to hear if it does it while driving

Does anything happen if you just take this shutter valve out? I had that same whining problem with my '81 GSL and I swithched it with the shutter valve out of an '85 parts car and the whining stopped, but it is still sucking air while idling. I am wondering if some of the other problems I am having have to do with this shutter valve. The car has a big problem starting when it is cold outside or it has sat for half a day or so. Even when I get it started, if it has not warmed up all the way if I put it in gear or pull the choke out too much, the car just dies.
