Dash Lights and Oil Cooler questions?

Yes, I have been through the archives, but my dash lights on my 84 GS 12A dont' work. Headlights work, taillights work, ect. Everything but the gauge cluster lights. Yes, I checked the fuse anyhow, it's good. Also adjusted the rheostat, no go. Also looked for the black/red wire under the console but coudn't find the one other than the emergency brake wire, and it was hooked up properly. I'm working with no service manual or wiring harness, so I'm kinda guessing. I tried to pulled the gauge cluster but discovered this thing is a giant PITA. How the heck do you get these gauge clusters out of the car? I would like to check the rear wiring just in case, but can't get the cluster out past the metal frame in front of it. Is there something I'm missing?

Also, is there supposed to be an oil cooler on an 84 GS 12A? And if so, where? I know the GSL-SE has their's below the radiator, but I don't have this on my car? The entire a/c system has been pulled, could they have pulled the oil cooler as well??

Thanks for the help guys, have the cooling problem figured out I think, one challenge at a time I suppose.

The oil cooler should be right under the oil filter. Its a black finned "bee hive" looking thing. I bet you have one, you just didnt know it. If you really dont have one, I waould suggest that you get one asap .

Don't sugarcoat it, how do you really feel

Actually, when the car is prepped for ITA/PRO7, I will go to a front mounted remote oil cooler. I just want to get it reliable enough for the time being for track days.

It's gotta be there. Also, your dimmer switch could be screwed. Bypass it and see what happens. It will either work, or immediately blow a fuse.

Tell me what to do to bypass it, I take it probably has 3 leads, one being hot, the other being ground. Ground it out and connect the hot and the other wire? Tell me before I blow my hand off or something.

And where is this red/black wire again, is it under the console/armrest, or is it actually ahead of the shift lever, below the radio? Under the armrest area, near the emergency brake, was a black/red wire, it was for the emergency brake light. There was a BIG black and Big white wire under there as well, they were connected.

The wire I think you're talking about is not under the console, it's under the shift boot. And it should be disconnected.

Mine was connected, and the fuse was fine, it was the dimmer that blew. Not having another dimmer switch, I clipped the wires off of it and connected the two red wires together (one has green stripe, the other has blue stripe) for max dash light illumination. In the future, I could put a new dimmer in there... if I wanted to.
