DAMNIT! Smoke!
I was adjusting the mixture on my carb, 'cause one of my friends had said my car was smoking a bit. He figured it was black smoke, so I figured, meh, I must just be running a bit rich. So I re-adjusted my mixture using the stumble method, cranked it back about a turn to smooth ou tthe idle, and I figured... "Hey, perfect". Got my mom to look at the tail pipe and she goes "Ohhhh boy, not again?!". I'm like "What?" She's like "Go watch while I step on the gas..."
I got out back, and she revved it up from idle. About as soon as it got to about 3500+ rpm, a steady cloud of blue smoke started billowing outta my tailpipe
It's not really that bad, but it IS noticeable from behind the car, and doesn't look nice Maybe an o-ring is gone? I dunno... this is pissing me off... buy the car, screw over the original engine. Put it newer old engine with relatively low miles, drive it for 2 months, find out it's smoking
Now comes the kicker... what can I do to make it last a bit longer? Could I put some of that STP stop smoke stuff in it, disconnect my oil metering pump, and run mixed gas to make up for the extra-viscous oil not being able to be burned? Or should I just face that facts, and drive the car till it dissappears in a cloud of smoke?
I have a feeling if this motor goes, Rex will be parked for a while, 'cause I have no money left I've invested around $1500 cdn in this car, and it's done nothing but give me problems, so I'm thinking of just selling it and using that money to fix up my truck
Maybe I'll go to the auto wreckers and pick up a small block V8 and go that route next year as my project at school in shop and metal classes.... At least that way I wouldn't have to pray that my car would make it 25 kilometers to Canadian tire up the hill, and pray that it will start after I get there and go in, and pray that it'll make it home without breaking anthing on the way evey time I go anywhere...

My old sa would do that once in awhile, smoke out the back. i would shut it off for awhile then start it and the smoke would go away. I think i had a coolant seal going though. Maybe try different oils to see if something different might work for you. Couldn't hurt any.

Paul - I don't want to bug Ralph about it, it's been a few months since I bought it from him, and I wouldn't feel right asking for money back. I'm just not a big fan of smoking vehicles, and I get kinda embarrassed driving around in a car with a nice stereo, nice spoiler, an air dam, and side skirts, when it's puffing smoke out the back, but I guess I'll make do until the winter when the S10 comes out.
I think I'll try to save up some $$$ and buy a seal kit and do all the soft seals. The engine doesn't look to have that many K's on it, so perhaps I can use the existing apex seals and stuff. I'll use my best judgement for that department. While I'm at it, I think I'll street port it to give it a bit more power, seeing as how I have 11 housings all together to monkey around on practicing.
I figure between a fully built '79 engine with a blown water seal, a fully built 83 engine that's got a leaky oil seal, and another 79-80 engine with everything but the rear housing and rotor I'll have enough parts to put together a nice set of rotors, housings, and plates...
I might just have to save a lot of cash up for new steel seals too, unfortunately. That's if I want an engine that'll last for a while...

haha, yeah... everytime I go anywhere over about 25 kilometres, I wreck something... like last time I went for a drive out to the auto wreckers, the rad overfill bottle fell off and landed on the exhaust manifold, melting a fair-szed hole in the side of it
This problem is multiplyed by about 15x whenever I have a friend in the car. Everytime somone else is in my car (especially hot chicks), something breaks... last time I had a chick in the car, one of my vacuum hoses broke from being brittle (this is at 12:00am or so), and I couldn't see which one, so I had to limp around town with the choke pulled out to keep it from stalling...
Oh well.... I think I'm going to just go buy a rubber seal kit from mazda, and overhaul the engine this winter... shouldn't take me too long, seeing as how I've already disassembled and re-assembled my '79 engine once already...
Anyone got any tips for street porting?
Jeff

cool... how much are templates, and where can I get one?
I've got lots of housings to practice on...
Also, how much of an advantage does porting exhaust ports give?
Jeff
edit:
found porting templates at racing beat for $39 US for the intake street port template, and $22 US for the exhaust street port template... OUCH... hmmm...
Anyone know of anywhere that sells them for cheaper than racing beat?
Also, what would I be expecting for a HP gain if I streeted out the intake AND exhaust ports? I wanna know if it's worth chancing screwing up my engine?
