Ok, I don't know if you want to hear this, but IMO the fixed light conversions are the dumbest thing you could ever do to a 7. Its possibly the ugliest thing anyone has ever thought of for the 1st gen. Worse than a big aluminum ricer wing on the back of a 7.

Are those actual headlamps or just spotlamps like on the Miata double-eye kit?

I'd rather have sleepy popups, the 70's design of 1 foot high wind blocks is what sucks.

Anything is better than those stupid bug eyes. You also don't have to worry about the 20+ yr old pop ups failing and getting out of sync at the wrong moment.

I think it looks very nice, and I'm a stock look kind of guy.
By the way if someone else has to cut metal like that, try using a dremmel with a cutting disc. Lots less vibration and you don't have that scary blade from the sawzall coming close to your hood or paint.

I like the bug eyes. Not much is cooler than driving down a dark highway looking between the two headlights. Plus, they're how I "wave" at other RX-7s I see on the road. No it doesn't look that nice from the outside, but I've not been known to care too much about how my car looks from the ouside.

That said, I see many advantages for the flush-lights... less weight, less complexity, better fuel economy... Yes fuel economy. Try going 110mph and then turning your headlights up... you can feel the air drag slow the car. Fortunately the wipers don't work at over 90mph so driving that fast in the rain is pointless, and driving that fast at night is just plain reckless. But it still makes a difference at 60.

One major advantage to flush lights (that is probably not an issue here) is that you don't have to worry about the headlight bucket being torn off/bent up by tree parts, or if the headlights are down when the oops occurs, having the headlights locked down by folded metal. (Like I said, not an issue here )

Dremels suck for cutting metal. Sawzalls are the next best thing to a plasma cutter.

looking good. it would look best on a black 7 tho IMO. then it sorta looks like the standard lights when when they r down, and not just random spots of black. i like it, and post more finished pix so we can see it fron a wider angle.

Ok, here is the pair, this will have to do till tommorow when I hope to have her running and out of the garage

On a side note, I did it without removing the tire and inner fender
was able to do it all from the front, a very small drill helps
and Peejay is right, id still be cutting if I was using a Dremel..... wir, wir, wir...

Wow, that looks a lot nicer than I thought it would... maybe it has something to do with how nice your car is too. Those would look sweet on a black car, but I dont think I would do it.

Thats too bad that they arent real headlights though, for how much they cost I would expect them to be.

This is one of the upgrades I was very wishy-washy about, till I saw the pics.

Looks great, thank you for taking the time and trouble to document/ photograph the process.

On a side note, how do you like your rollcage? That is another item that I want feedback on before I purchase one.

Ughhhhh!!

I agree with an earlier reply. Flush mount headlight look awesome on a third gen, OK on a second gen, and crappy on a first gen. They just look odd way back in the recess of opening.

I am looking for a pop up kit like the Miata. I know the Miata kit can be transformed to the first gen, but I don't like the fact that they don't have the black surround hiding all the hardware. Time to get to work in my garage.

You paid how much for that???

Just one dudes opinion.

Brian

She is a bit dirty after 3 weeks in the garage but here are some full car shots.

Tommorow I'll take her for a drive at night and see how the lighting is.
