A couple questions about my oil cooler swap
Okay, First of all. Heres the story so far. In October my car grazed a concrete guardrail in a spin out in the rain and mashed the front end up a little. Since then ive been working on it trying to get it back on the road, and making some basic modifications while I have the chance. Its pretty much a do or die situation. But anyway. I bought a 82 radiator, (again). And mounted the 82 cooler below it. But it doesn't hang perfectly vertical. Its kinda leaning on the sway bar. My question about this is. Has anyone had this happen? If I just wrap the sway bar in something soft to protect the cooler from hitting it while driving, do you think it will be okay?
Question #2. The old heater hoses. Can I just weld some copper pipe capping over these at the T's and block them off?
Final and possibly dumbest question. Okay, I looked everywhere in my Haynes manual and there isn't a single diagram of which line goes where. So I guessed and figured that the short hoses goes from the front of the block to the TOP of the cooler, and the long one goes to the bottom? This seemed like the obvious solution, but I just wanted to make sure before I turn this thing over again.
Thanks for reading.
Shawn.
PS. I have an '85

Bump.
'cause I'm planning on putting an 82 cooler onto an 85 engine, too!
And I honestly don't remember which hose was where when I yanked it from the parts heap.

Sorry I don't have any answers to your questions, but was wondering where you got the oil cooler for your '82? And how much was it? I was thinking of either buying a new one for my '81 or pulling the top mounted cooler off an '83 junker and putting it on.
Any recommendations?

i got it from jr69187. He had a few. there might be one left. But, you're better off just checking ebay once every few days, they pop up there pretty often. I have an 85, not an 82 though. What ever you do. Dont put an 83 cooler on a 82. youde just be regressing.

Well, if you had front end damage, the rad support could be bent. Other that that, I have no idea. Is the oil cooler straight? My '82's cooler was rather crooked due to a run-in with the ground at some point in its life. Good Luck

Im pretty sure the supports are straight... I think i would of noticed when i took them off and re painted them... I was thinking more along the lines that the 82 supports might be deeper, maybe? To set the raditor closer to the engine? Maybe someone with a s2 could give me the depth of there radiator mounts.

I think inittab had this problem when doing the 82 into 85 oil cooler swap. At the same time he installed braided stainless steel oil lines and simply installed them in such a way as to pull the oil cooler back towards the engine. So if you look at his long oil line it sort of curves upward and thus pulls the cooler back. Its hard to explain, maybe he can get a shot of it for you.

Water comes out of the rear housing and goes into the driver's side heater core pipe. It comes out of the other pipe and goes to the metal line on the passenger side framerail.
