My SE is currently my weeekend warrior.. It's AC went out like a yr ago..I finally got a working AC compressor in a spare SE to use, but now I'm contemplating yanking the whole AC out... How many of you guys yanked it out and should I do it??

I've removed the AC units from my RX4 as well as my '80.
Saves a lot of weight, as well as getting rid of one more thing to break and cause headaches. Do it! -WG

When I yanked my AC with everything including belts and all mounting stuff, it came to real close to 50lbs.
I love my car in the summer,
Screw Ac 2;80 all the way!!
2:80= 2 windows down at 80Mph

I yanked mine recently. It weighed 16kg for everything forward of the firewall.

I say do it.

Mine's in my car, like it's supposed to be, keeping my *** cool when it's 110*F outside here in West Texas.

Note that everybody that "yanked" theirs live in cool climates. "Nope, don't need that thing up here in the Arctic Circle. Weighs too much, too!"

SoCal? Where? East LA - you need it (body armor's HOT!). Redondo Bch? get rid of it...

I've still got my stock A/C setup using the good old R-12. It's great in the summer. If I were you, I'd leave it in - it's a good thing to have for a hot summer day.

I still have my AC unit installed, but I have removed the belt for the compressor pump. I'm thinking about just removing everything because I NEVER use AC in ANY car, even if it's equipped. I don't like the way the cold air smells (like fake air of something). I always roll the window down and listen to the turbo spooling. I was wondering, do you just re-route the AC coolant hoses or plug them up if you remove it? I have to remove everything I can to reduce weight.

I agree with adrenaliferx7, a/c air smells bad, not to mention that if its really hot outside and you get out of a ice cold car you get shocked like crazy, thats never a nice feeling. BUT, it can get pretty unbearable on really hot humid days which is why mines still in and I'm getting it converted to R134a in the spring. If it were a weekend cruiser it would definatly be gone.

Here Here, Zookeeper. You cold climate dudes can act tough about no a/c. Spend a couple of 110+ days w/ no A/C. Windows down at that point only creates convection.

Wink

I'm in Canada and as long as it's working, I'll never dump it. My last car didn't have it and my *** fried on hot summer days (yes, we too have a few of those). Especially if you have leather interior or if you take it on any road trips. I personally get a little tired after a few hours of highway driving with the windows down. And city driving during rush hour really sucks without air. If you've got it, you can still turn it off and enjoy a nice day with the roof / windows open - if it gets too hot, you have the A/C.....luxuries man, why toss 'em??

I would put the working compressor back in... but I need to replace those o-rings (can't find them anywhere) at the back of the compressor where the lines screws in. Then I need to charge the damn thing back up with R-12, which is HELLA expensive nowadays. What are they running? $12 an oz? If I'm going to remove the whole system...did you guys remove the condensor up front? not a good idea right? since it kinda protects the radiator from rocks, birds and other small animals..
