couple of q's for 1st gen owners

hi, i just have a few questions since i almost don't come to the 1st gen section since i have a 2nd gen. well the thing is ive been thinking on buying a 1st gen for a daily driver, i drive an automatic protege and i really get bored because is.. well is not a performance car. my questions are really basic i just want to know what is the mpg this cars give normally????, im looking for a gsl or a gsl-se if i buy one its going to be one of those models. which is better for dd the 12A or the 13B???. if i do some modifications to alter the performance of the car is mainly going to be only bolt-ons, exhaust, intake, header etc just bolt-ons. i which i could drive daily my 2nd gen TII but it isn't possible since it consumes too much gas and it will consume a lot more when i upgrade the turbo etc.

thanks

Don't expect more than 20mpg, 18 is average. The GSL-SE is known to be more reliable.

As for mods, if you're just letting it breather easier, you'll probably get better mileage.

I'd get the -SE (I've had both the 12a GS driven the GSL [no diff in performance] and the -SE) and just overall enjoyed the -SE more. A little more spunk. I don't know about it being more reliable... with all of the 20+ year old EFI crap I had allot of nagging issuses... but it never left me anywhere (only because the PO told me about pulling the EFI fuse.).

Milage isn't great... not really even good when you factor how much horse power you don'thave.

The SE would probably be a better choice, mainly because of the fuel injection over carburetion. I have an 83 S as a DD and I have no real problems with it. Just keep with routine maintenance and it should be great. The Protege` will get better gas mielage though

The Se has more Hp but on a whole gets poor fuel economy due to the fact that it only has 2 injectors and they are large. It can get 20-24mpg on long trips and if you open up the exhaust. It does not like stop and go driving or in town driving for fuel economy.

Carb'd models I have gotten up to 26 mpg on the highway and even got 23 on a regular basis with a Mikuni 44phh and header system as long as you keep your foot out of it. Another member on this forum who has changed the timing cut down the fuel PSI and lean out the carb system has got into the 30's with his carb'd 12a(nikki). In my opinion in the long run the 12a carb models are alot more free of the inherent problems that crop up on the Gsl-Se bastard F.I. system. Yes, I can make that statement. I have owned and done every diagnostic procedure and then some on the Se.

ONe thing I will warn you about:

I had a beautiful 91 RX7 once, and decided to buy this cheap beater GSLSE to use as a daily driver. After a year, I sold the 91 because it was boring. Still have the SE.

thanks for the imput guys, ill see if i can find a gsl-se thought its not going to be simple to do since in puerto rico to find a gsl-se on the road or on sale is like seeing and enzo on the street which i haven't seen yet. maybe ill talk to my uncle who lives on new yersey to see if he finds one on his area.

thanks
