Could anyone tell me what model RX this is?

The owner doesn't seem too sure if it a S,GS,or GSL model. the reason why is because i want LSD for a turbo II swap. Can anyone tell by those pictures? is there anything i could ask the owner to look for that might identify the model?

Sorry if this post seems very unknowledgeable. I'm new to the RX-7 world and so is the owner i think lol.

It's a 5 speed with a moon roof and 12a motor

Rear disc brakes would be a GSL or GSL-SE (depending on year). The GSL-SE was only available in 84 & 85.

If you could have him take a picture through the rear wheel (to see disks or drums) that would give you your answer. Otherwise its hard to say for sure since these cars are so old, anything could have been switched... Nice wheels, I like the color too.

Alrighty, let's start the process of elimination.

Doesn't have the bumper style of a 79-80
Doesn't have the bolt pattern of a GSL-SE

It currently has '83 "Limited Edition" wheels on it, not sure if those were on there stock or added later.

Other than that there's nothing in the pics that could identify which trim level it is. All you know for sure is that it's an 81-85 S, GS or GSL

Most likely it's a GSL or an '83 Limited Edition. If it's an '83LE, jump on it, that's a steal. If it's a GSL, still jump on it, the rims alone are worth min $400-500 in okay condition.

To narrow it down the most obvious thing is the rear brakes. S and GS had drum brakes, GSL had disc brakes.

Anyone who says the sunroof or the leather trim is a giveaway for trim level is wrong. My friend Joel has one with leather that's got drum brakes (GS) and I've seen a bunch of sevens with smoked glass, some from the factory and some acquired after (like my GS).

Jon, those aren't 83 LE rims. The car cannot be an 83 LE, as those were all silver outside, red (cloth?) interior.
It does appear to have had a badge of some sort on the rear roof pillar, which *could* indicate that it's a GSL. It also appears to be 81-83, by looking closely at the dash if front of the steering wheel.

It isn't an S since it has the electric mirrors. It isn't an '81-82 as it has the brake cooling slots in the front air dam (can't recall if those showed up in '83 or '84). Looking at the seats I would hazard a guess it is a GSL. Way to tell for sure over a GS is if it has 4 wheel discs and a wiper on the rear glass.

i see its got an 84-85 front end but its an 81-83 car. a factory GSL will have a rear wiper, which i dont see.

best way to tell would be just to look at it.

car looks nice anyways, is that black? or a dark green?

I was just reviewing the emails and he said it was repainted to britsh racing green, so it could still possibly be a LE ?? i hope at least it's a GSL

my guess is its either an 84 or 85 gs (84 or 85 due to the cooling slots in the lower air damn by wheels) gs well because like others have said no rear wiper and the power mirrors even though the mirrors could have been added by previous owner. but in any case i would have to say that it probably does not have limited slip. but still a nice looking car, and you could more than likely find a limited slip rear end at a junkyard or find a le parts car

as far as i know (and i am sure that someone on here that is more familiar than i am will correct me if i am wrong) le's were produced (atleast in the states) from 84 and 85, yes they had rear disc and limited slip rear. if the 83 had le wheels on it then from what i know (doing a se conversion from a gs) the bolt pattern is not the same as other models so they more than likely just dropped the le rear end and front brakes on it but if they went that far then they more than likely also dropped a 13b or larger in it as well.

hmm had to read that one twice lol interesting thought. so i guess the other question would be what if it does have rear disks but no wiper blade?. then the only way to know about the lsd would be to jack the rear wheels up and see if they turn in the same direction?

How extensive is it anyways to drop in a LSD rear end? also i heard of welding it? or using this

http://www.phantomgrip.com/product_l...hp?make=Mazda#

But the note says :SE does that mean it converts it to a SE rear end or does it mean it will only fit in a GSL-SE ??

Limited edition cars were in 1983 ONLY,and never had rear disk brakes. The LE package was basically an upgraded GS with the moonroof, velour seating surfaces,14" mesh style wheels(not those in the picture, the LE was not a flat mesh like in the pics),chateau silver paint, upgraded stereo, and maybe a few other things I am forgetting. The LE was an open differential with drums, crank windows,no rear wiper, and no brake ducts(84-85 got the ducts looking vents). The LE shared the same bolt pattern with every other 12A powered car,but had the 14" size instead of the standard 13".I have no idea what model that car is,but I am pretty confident it ISN't an 83 LE.

if the rear end has disk brakes then the chances are very high that its an lsd from a gsl

Thumbs up

it deffenately has the cowl vent of an 81-83 (car in the top of pic)and the lower valance of an 84-85(car on bottom)
i have not seen any factory pics of 83's that i can recall with the slits in them .
how long ago had it been repainted ? the paint looks a bit 'foggy'... looks like either a poorly taken care of re-paint ,bad paint job, or alot of orange peel??
also , since the missmatched parts on the front egsist , has the car been wrecked?

So basically if it's got rear disks it's LSD and if it's drums it's a open diff? And i hope it wasn't in a accident lol
