Compession : Smoke or Steam?

I was in my 83 in a parking lot one day and when i pulled away i noticed all of my coolant was gone. Like and idiot i drove short distances back to my house. When i got there there was smoke coming out of the hood. My dad says it was just steam. What is it and what should i do. He says that i have a busted heator hose. Is the engine gone?

Thanks

Justin

Find the leak and fix it; sounds like your dad has a head start.

Hopefully you didn't do any damage by possibly overheating. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about your motor being "gone".

I agree about not jumping to any conclusions.
However, don't EVER do that again! It's just about the WORST thing you can do.

We don't know if you have low compression, if you want to know that you have to check yourself. Again, you're jumping the gun. Fix your busted hose and then see what happens.

Heres another one. I have an oil leak between rotor housings. It is right inder the oil filter and the the filter is not leaking so i think that is a broken gasket. I have heard that they sometimes come from the factory that way. Should i worry about that.

There are 2 o-rings under the oil filter pedestal - it is common for them to leak, especially on cars like yours with the small oil coolers under the filter. You can pick up new o-rings at your local Mazda dealer for cheap. However, as I remember one of the bolts is pretty hard to remove, you might need some kind of a special tool.

The usual leak on the engine is the infamous dowel pin leak, which as I understand it manifests itself by a pool of oil near the "Mazda" writing on the top of the engine.
