Clicking Noise

Hey all. I have a problem. My car makes a strange clicking noise from the right rear. It is a loud clicking noise. At first I thought it was the exhaust hangers so I fixed them all. I also did most of a bushing install in the rear...and yet this clikcing noise persists.

I have no idea what it could be. I am pritty sure it has something to do with the breaks, for every time I step on teh breaks thenoise goes away.

I did a serch found nothing useful.

Thanks, Ted.

I've had that happen before on numerous cars. The giveaway if the fact that it stops when you push on the brakes. Most often this is a brake spring or something just nicking the rotor as the wheel spins. I'm guessing you have rear discs.

Actually Im guessing a wheel bearing is going out. When you apply the brakes it re-centers the wheel on your sloppy bearing and the noise stops. When you jack the car up can you move the wheel at all on the spindle? My driveshaft going out made more of a "whup whup" sound...

X 4. If its not a brake part its probably the rear axle bearing on the passenger side. They seem to go first for some reason.

I will check to see if teh wheel has any play, but as I recal there is no play. I will double check to make sure.

One last question, how much would you guys say a right rear wheel bearing would run me?? ( I live in Canada) And yes I do have rear discs.

Thanks for the help thus far.

By the time I figured out this problem with my old 7 the bearing had siezed up and welded to the spindle. I suppose its possible that it may not have any lateral play and still be bad. How many miles on your car? If its >100K I would probably change them out so you dont suffer the same fate as I did! I dont think a bearing and race could cost you more than 30$ at an autoparts store but you will need a shop to press in the race probably.

Wheel bearing will make that noise, but the only time I've ever had it, its been the caliper or pads.

As far as buying the wheel bearing goes, every time I need a bearing now, I bring my old bearing and go to a bearing shop. So far in my experience its been a HECK of a lot cheaper, and also you sometimes have the option of buying a higher quality one should you wish.
