7" Touchscreen LCD Came in :D
Well ladies and gents ... the moment has arrived where I'm like a kid in a candy store lol. When you get 3 packages to come in in the same day you can't be happier . Anyhow I'm just going to post pictures of this because the rest won't reallly matter to you guys.
Fitment seems like I just need to take away just a bit from all the side, about 1/16 to 1/8" so really good fitment and the screen is really slim too as you can tell by the back side.
BTW ... the screen was still in its wrap ... thats why it looks a bit blurry.

I will be running windows Xp with some sort of Front end (front end means a program like stock cars have, a more user friendly interface.) This is one example which is what i might get. Its called road runner and its free.

Some screen shots of the interface.
Also I will have my megaquirt in there, I plan on viewing 6/8 guages on there. 8 might be too small on this screen though but 6 is more than plenty enough anyways.

Also from reading around ... I will need to upgrade sound cards for a better sound quality (looking mostly at the X-Fi Sound Blaster Cards), also will need a 6 channel Amp to boost up the wattage from about 5-6 watts on the computer outputs, to something that will deliver atleast 200-300 watts to the speakers. So if anyone has anything in mind for that let me know.
Trochoid. She should be up and running once I have everything hooked up. so maybe by the end of the week or so. I still need to get a few things like switches and still unsure how it will be mounted in there yet. I might fork out to get a real case, but if I do it will need to be a full metal case (Alot of them for this kind of board are just plastic). The metal one from reading can be grounded and acts as a shield to prevent Electro magnetic interferance from going to nearby wires and sensors.
Looks like with the amp and soundcard that I still need to get. I might be diping into 1100$-1300$ depending on the amp that I get I guess.

"they make 2.5 DIN carputers with flip-out screens too - 'bout $1000 a pop though."
ya and even the ones at that price still need a few more things. also the boards are usually only with the via 1-1.3 GHz range ... i wanted something a little more

thta's actually an amazing fit. I'm considering making an electric RX, and that would be a good way to display the BMS data and voltage remaining.

Damn. Thats more power than my desktop has (I built it in 2000).
Man that would be badass for me. I could hook in my LM-1 and Aux box and have full time gauges on there. Are these desktop parts that you use in this setup?

I've made my own skin for RR for my setup, I'll toss up a pic when I get home.
For the audio, it depends on what you want to run, # of speakers, subs etc.
A better sound card will help for sure, but what I've done with mine for now is use the onboard card, and split the signal to 2 amps (both 2 channel amps). One amp has the low pass filter enabled and powers 2 subs, the other powers the rear speakers with no filter. I've left the front ones disconnected since you don't really hear them anyway.
After looking at your screen, I'm wishing I had gone with the 7"- it took way too much effort to mount mine. Yours looks like a perfect fit.

Ya you can use regular computer parts. There are a few things to watch out for though. Like the via Processor and mobile intel or AMD processor use less power, also the whole board is 17cm x 17cm so really compact. This board is actually the most feature packed one that I could find. Will all my accessories, calculating wattage I would be close to about 120W, hence me getting the 200W one. I'll post up pictures of everything once I get more time.
Also something to watch out for temperatures. In a car environment you can see -30 to lets say 50 degrees celcius. This is when those specs come in really handy. Most of the problems though are in the lower temperatures. Things like HD needs to warm up, the touchscreen crystals need more time to load up, and things like that. In the hotter days, you have to watch out that you're not over heating the processor and screen. Nothing from what I've read really breaks down, but will just not work until warmed up basically.
Also you can't create an inviroment that easily to accomodate both sides of the world, like you can't just warp your whole board and equipment , other wise it won't allow it to breather properly when it runs and hence over heating.

I'm not sure about doing subs too ... but if I ever decide too .. I would like just spend the money once and know that I have the capability to do so later if wished upon. I'm not that crazy about subs though.
All the audio components I would like them to be CDT audio ... but will see how much I can afford of that. i would like to get their upstage system.

That one farad capacitor is a good idea.
Also the forum on mp3car.com is one of best for doing this kind of stuff. That is where I learned most of this stuff from.
I should also add that for that clean look, the ashtray will be holding various input/output ports along with a power button for the computer. Still pending the idea of how it will be done due to low interior space.

are you actually mounting the computer behind the monitor? You could also mount it in the gap above the storage bins, under the upper sheetmetal, and put the I/O ports in the armrest.

If you want a good amp for a good price, check that out. I have that exact amp in my Alero running the 4 interior speakers and the sub and its amazing. The sound quality is great, lots of options for tuning, built in low pass and high pass filters, and a few other things too. Its a great amp for the price, even if you don't use even half the power.
