carburetor removal
recently bought an 85 GSL with a few... or several... problems. it runs, it drives, it does neither very well.
long story short what I'm working on getting the carburetor off, and by working I mean standing there staring at it scratching my head, I don't know where to begin. there's about a million "guides" and none of them are helping me because I don't know what most of them are talking about. it's all anti afterburn this and cruise control cable that. nobody has taken into consideration that maybe not everybody knows what these things are.
what I need is a guide that says "hey, you're gonna remove this, here's a picture of what it looks like and where its located. now pull this piece off, here's another picture"
can somebody maybe help me?

My suggestion is to download a copy of the factory service manual, It gives pretty much a blow by blow of how to do it. Here is a link:

I took that nut off and put it back on 3 times recently. A regular 12 mm box worked on my '79 if you get the hoses out of the way. Get a magnet to retrieve the nut when you drop it onto the top of the intake manifold...keep trying, it will go back on. Before you put the nuts back on, clean all the studs and nuts so they thread on with minimal force. A little oil on the thread helped me.

When putting the hard to get to nuts back on, I found that sliding the nut on to a long screwdriver and holding it there while placing the tip of the screwdriver on the top if the carb stud works at getting them back on. Then they start on the stud easier without it dropping in to the intake manifold black-hole.
