Carburator

This is my first post and i'm sorry if this is a redundant questions, but i got tired of sorting through the many pages returned by a search result.

How different (if at all different) is a carburator on a rotary engine from a carburator on a piston engine.

From what i was able to gather from reading the different treads is that they seem to be different.

They're not.
I mean the calibration is different, but...
well, it would help to know why you're asking.
For example- if you want to know if they are easily rebuilt compared to other carbs, then yeah- easy. But if you're entertaining the idea of slapping a big-*** Carter or Holley for a piston engine onto your rotary, than "no", that aint gonna fly without some reworking.

Why i want to know is that i have a uncle whose a licenced mechanic for over 30 years now and just wondering if it were necessary for me to rebuild my carb if he would be able to do this.

I ask cause i just bought a rx-7 and i need to choke it in order to start it and keep it idleling. After about 5 mins then i can shut off the choke and it can idle on it's own.

Yeah for a mechanic, rebuilding the Nikkis should be a snap. He'll probably have it done in an hour, hour & 1/2.

yea, i am a technician in training, but the nikki was the first and only carb i've messed with and i can now tear in to it and swap parts in less than 30 minutes. a full rebuild can be done in under a couple hours like sterling said. it's worth it. mine is pushing WAY too much fuel but it still starts up and idles without the choke (just doesnt do anything else). AAHAHAHHAHA

I prefer SU's, you only have a single needle to worry about, plus they're a lot simpler to take apart due to the lack of secondaries and other multiple needles and supporting stuff

What would cause that, the need to have the choke on in order to keep it idleling when you start it, in the middle of summer.

In summer you dont need a choke, just a fast idle setting(which is tied off the choke on a Nikki carb). Unlike most carbs (which have a fast idle cam), the Nikki has a rod thats tied to the choke mechanism. FBII, a full rebuild takes more than that! Add up all the cleaning time etc.....................

I've only driven it once or twice so far and i've needed to have the choke pulled in order to keep it idleling, it'll take me a bit of time to get used to it. I'm worried about it flooding, especially since i need to pull the choke until it warms up.

If the engine is cold, you need the choke.

I don't *use* my choke, mind you, but I accept that the car will run like **** for the first ten minutes until the car is warmed up.

But it's only been 85-90 degrees here.

unfortunately the car won't idle without it, it dies, but if i use the choke about halfway it will idle, and once it's warmed up (about 5-10 mins) it can idle without the choke on.

That seem strange to anyone, it is a 85 GS.

I'm on the eastern coast of Canada, and even though our summer has had it's up's and downs, for the most part it's been pretty warm, so that why i'm puzzled by the fact i need to use the choke in order to keep it from dying until it has had time to warm up

Search. (youll get that alot here BTW) SA (early 7's 79-80 First of the first gens), FB (1st gens also)81-85, FC(2nd gen) 86-91, FD 93- whenever they stopped making 3rd gens? Aussies label them slightly differently.
