We have a sunroof in the mold now and the hood is being molded up as we speak, just takes time, we are doing this in our spare time. As soon as the sunroof comes out I'll post a pic so the standard can be seen.

carbon fiber is stronger lighter and looks cooler, but most only have one layer or CF on top of fiberglass. a.k.a. not a full carbon hood, so the benifits are looks...

Could you not make a hood out of a 3/8 sheet of allumium(sp)? I mean... take a 3/8 - 1/8( i think that would be to thin) and use the under side of the hood to mount to it or even build your own cross braces to keep the hood stirdy. Just a thought... would be easy to press vents into it and could put a scoop on it for CA intake.

I'm with Wodi. How do these hoods perform at speed - especially with a scoop. I've seen too many aftermarket CF hoods turn into wings. The RX-7 hood is already extrememly light and is better protection in case of fire. Have any of you seen CF burn?

I have not... but i don't know if you would want to the allinum on a race car either. Extrem high temps would make it melt... might would have to be tempered, if that is the right term for it, to withstand the heat. Something like a cooking pot type metal. Light weight but can stand direct contact with fire. but will have to look into it.

Thanks a lot for your answer. I will wait to take a look at the sunroof you are telling here, is this going to be for a first gen rx7 sunroof...??? I would like it better than the clear ones...

Can't wait to see the pics...

You have my attention!

A sunroof panel to match the hood, I like that idea!

well i have 2 holes in mine. looks like someone had a fake scoop on it at one point in time or something else... but they are rusting... so i would say steel. most cars until late 80's i think were mostly steel.

I'm pretty sure that my FC is either fiberglass or really really ghetto metal (possibly aluminum)

Well i don't have shop or anything or i would see about giving the alinum hood a go. It is around 225$ for a sheet of 4'x10'x1/8". I think that would work. about the underside... would need to keep it or find away to brace the sheet with the same bend in it. Rivit it down or spot weld. could use the same henges.

damn i wish i was friend with a miller or something that would get this done or let me try to get it done.. at any rate. i think that the hood is wider that 4' so migh have to get the 5'x10' but not sure how much more that would cost.

If you built your on braces for the hood you would be able to do venting the way that you want it.....come to think of it i wonder if metal flashing would work? ah the ideas... well guess i'm going to see if i can find a job at a machine shop after work.. IT by day steel worker by night. that might work. sounds like a super hero job.

at any rate... it is possible to produce something that may be as light if you don't have to have the CF look. just a thought. Not many products mand for 1st gens out there from what i have found.

aussiesmg is working on a fibreglass hood that will be quite light and cheaper than CF...

And Manntis makes a fibreglass vented hood too:

Definitely steel.

I don't know about all FC's, but from the hoods that I've popped on them they're EXTREMELY heavy for their size. The first gen hood is really pretty light. If anybody needs CF, it's the FC owners lol

SA22C Carbon hoods

How's it going guys? This is the guy from Australia doing the carbon SA22C hoods.
If you can get 10 people together can do OEM hoods for around US$560. I have vented hoods on the way also . My hoods weigh around 9lbs give or take and Carbon has been vaccum bagged. Please view attatchments for pics of OEM hood and vented.

According to iscracing.net the stock FB hood weighs 35 lbs, their fiberglass hood weighs 13 lbs for $200.

Yeah, the weight advantages of CF over fiberglass aren't really that remarkable when you compare it to the weight of steel/aluminum. What makes it better is the strength and, most definitely, the look. CF is just so damn cool looking
