Can't redline! ['79]

So here's another one of my problem threads:

I can't redline. At all.

I'll pull the most power from 0-4500. I start feeling like I'm losing power after 4,500, but I can still keep going. I cannot go past 6,000, no matter what. Once I DO shift into next year no matter how long I ride 6,000, I get a huge boost in power.

Before it was almost impossible to go past 5-5.5k. Once we got the spark plugs replaced (Most of them were burning out), I could go up to 6, and I did feel like I regained some of my power.

I've never seen this car redline, it's a shame. What ever can I do? I've got access to a pretty good technician.

*Edit*: Also, could anyone tell me what kind of improvements I could feel when driving this, if I were to do some things like K&N Intake and RB Exhaust, and then not sure what to do after that?

I'm not sure a bone stock FB can even redline can it?

Just a few basic things off the top of my head... make sure the trailing ignition works, check the ignition timing, replace the fuel filter and make sure the cats aren't clogged up.

As for imrovements, the best single mod you can do on a rotary is install a proper full exhaust with extractors and free flowing mufflers. Makes a huge difference.

Are you kidding about the redline? The smile through me off. Please clarify

Anyway, if I throw on that exhaust, how much of a HP boost will I get, and will I still be emissions legal?

if you use a decent high-flow cat, and everything else is right you'll probably pass sniffer tests in most states. It will NOT pass visual in CA most likely. RB's exhaust are not carb certified. Also since you've got a 79, you'll be changing from a heat exchanger to a catalytic converter, this is GOOD for emissions, but CA's CARB ****'s will probably still fail you on visual

On top of the good suggestions (fuel filter should be check #1. Hell, keep 2 in the car with you. The ones on these cars are laughably undersized even for the 12a's needs. They clog up pretty quickly (15k miles or worse I've heard) and can cause fuel starvation at the top end.) you'll want to check coils and ignitors, cap and rotor on the dizzy. I'm betting you either have a collapsed heat exchanger, an ignition problem or most likely a fuel filter that is just dead.

YMMV, HIH,
matt

This is off on a tangent compared to the other suggestions, but when I was experimenting with my fan clutch in "tornado mode", I couldn't rev my engine past 6k and even THAT was pushing it. Is your fan clutch frozen up?

If it just will NOT go above a certain rpm, IN ANY GEAR, you may also have a plugged cat,,,,,,along with the other things to check.

You have a '79...hummmm, no cats.... if everything is stock and works properly, I would guess that the the aircleaner element is very dirty, muffler is blocked or yet the thermal reactor has collapsed internally. Time to get a header!

Or, sorry for the stupid question again but:

Does anyone know what a conversion from a points ignition system to an electrical one would cost in terms of parts, and relative installation difficulty?
