Can not Decide what to do.

I am currently trying to decide if Ishould sell one of my first gens to get a secound gen. I currently own two first gens a 1979 with what I think is the GS model and a 1984 GSL. The car I would be buying is a 1987 GXL 5-speed with 150K and, the motor maybe going out on it, because the seller says he goes through a quart of oil a week and it somkes when it first starts in the morning. When I drove the car I did not see or smell any smoke, all of the electronics worked, the engine reved nicely with no dreaded 3500 RPM studder, the engine bay looked clean, no major dents, a couple of paint chips on the front bumper and the interior was okay. He was asking a thousand for the car, which I told him I would think about it. The car I would be selling is a 1984 GSL 5-speed with 170k on it, It has a new clutch, clutch master and slave cylinder, it is currently in the middle of a carb rebuild with new floats. before the rebiuld it had blue smoke both in the engine bay and out the exaust, the factory A/C works, under the hood it is caked in oil along with what it think is fresh oil puddleing ontop of the engine, and the exauhst does not look like it secured very well. Since I have owned the GSL Ihave not driven it 50 miles yet and I have had it since october of '05, so I am not too attached to it. my question is should I get rid of the GSL and an get the FC or should I just stay with what I have?

(I do not have pics of the FC, and the GSL is the black one in my avatar)

thanks,

Rotor Nut

I would say yes, - but I wouldn't buy a car with a blown engine (or an engine about to be blown). It's going to cost more to repair than the car itself.

Also - don't get an N/A. It's seriously slow. At least get a TII if you're gonna go with a porker 2nd gen.

the car is not worth a grand - you want to fool w/it knock yourself out - now and
in the coming years you shouls see 1st gens bringing better money then
2nd gens - that is 2nd gens that arent modded bigtime - variety is the

Sorry, I could never sell the '79. It is my first car that I bought and I spent way too much time working on her to sell her.

I offered the guy $700-$800 which he said that was fair but was going to think about it, and the car that I would be selling is completely stock, and the GXL is mecanically stock, but he added a Victoria British spoiler, and a CD player to it. Also I would keep the car stock if I bought it anyways.

God I wish or I would have raided it already, There was two SA's for sale for $250 like a year ago but I didn't have the space for them. Sorry I do not remeber the number for them, and I think someone else bought them.

how much more does a FC weigh than a FB? I though a GSL-SE and a GXL were pretty close.

The GSL weighs close to 2400 lb, and the GXL weighs around 3000 I think

From what I have read the sport model fc (4-piston brakes, no power options) weighs around 2600lbs, and I think a GXL weighs around 2700, the turbo model is the heavy one, around 2800lbs.

A friend of mine has a 86' GXL with a LT1/T56 swap, full interior and everything, it weighed 2820lbs.

im trying to decide the same thing, I like the suspension and brakes better on the FC but the 1st gens seem more reliable and parts are cheaper. since you already have one 1st gen I would say go for it.

1k doesn't sound bad for a 2nd gen, I have an 87 SE, along with the widebody. They are totaly different animals. While the 2nd gen doesn't feel as nimble as the 1st, it is by no means a porker, and they are faster stock than the 12As.

I bought my 2nd gen as a 1 owner, 75k car, it now has 104k and I wouldn't let it go for less than 4000.

what I'm worried about is that either one, the FB or the FC, engines are going to blow soon and I'm trying to decide which one is the lesser of the two evils.
