came back to the USA yesterday. Broke the RX7 today :(

As most know, I been in Afghanistan for a year.Yesterday was the long anticipated return to my beloved RX7. Picked up a new battery put it in and she cranked right up and ran great all day. Today she drove fine too. Then I put it in reverse and the stick went limp on me. I tried to pullit out and it went round and round and round. I lost all forward, backward, and side movement. It was a circular movement. Then I got pissed and punched it and it popped then back into spot. later on as I was driving it did it again but between 3rd and 4th gears but I was able to recover quickly before being re-ended. So what the heck is doing this? Not that it matters muchbecause I am swapping the LS in there anywya.

Any help is appreciated or comments. I do need to use this car as a DD until the 9th when I leave to go get my pathfinder from Delaware. No it wont be traveling long distances either.

here are some pics of here and the last beeing car meets motor for first time.

I don't have the foggiest idea about what's going on with your tranny.

I just wanted to say, welcome back from Afghanistan!

Don't LS an SA!! save it for an FB. You could prolly come out ahead selling a clean SA and getting an FB to LS. and have a better starting point( bigger brakes/and LSD for the GSL models(84-85)

As far as the tranny... you can remove a plate on the side of the shifter from under the car and look at the assembly and springs, sound like you may have some sloppy busting and it's letting the bottom pop out, hopefully none of that stuff is broken.

As far as the motor, NO. I want it to be the oldest LS swapped RX7

I had an issue with my old SA trans getting stuck in 3rd gear while going around Road Atlanta. That wasn't fun. Never determined what exactly the problem was, but I found out it's apparently kind of a common thing for those transmissions. So I swapped in a FB trans and haven't looked back. I don't know how soon you plan on going with a LS, but if it's not too soon, I'd just pick up a FB trans and swap it in.

I saw your car at DGRR, and it's a sexy SA. It's going to be a total beast with a LS. I am very interested in seeing this completed.

Sounds like you maybe lost the nylon bushing in the shift tower... either the big one that supports the ball pivot, or the small one at the bottom that provides connection between the stick and the operating arm.

Or maybe the bolts holding your shift tower on the trans have backed out, and are letting the lever flop around.

Look here: http://www.mazdatrix.com/g4.htm

And welcome home.

Yeah def sounds like a shifter problem. Lift up the rubber and check the 3 screws. If that 12a is coming out, would it be for sale? I would def be interested. BTW, welcome back. The work you do over there is very appreciated.

Yeah, I am probably going to put maybe 40 miles on it before motor swap. Thanks for the kinds words about my last deployment, it was by far the hardest one I ever did so it means alot.

The motor will be going up for sale on here but I can never get my F/S threads to post. I put in two so far as a member and neither ever got put up. Granted I sold the parts either way through other sites but jeesh. Anyway the motor runs amazing and even the tranny is strong but wierd. I was contemplating parting it but it runs so damn good it would be a shame.
