A/C problem

Left work in my 84GSL with the ac on, when the choke kicked off the rpms dropped to a near stall. Turned the ac off and everything was fine. Prior to this I had the throttle opener set to 1100rpms with the ac running. Got back to work and attempted to adjust the throttle opener, no effect. Pulled the vacuum line off and found a suction so assume the ac solenoid is working. I am left thinking the throttle opener has seen better days. Do believe I have a spare or two so might try swapping it this weekend. Has anyone ever had one go bad?

I dont think mine has ever gone bad, but I broke the nipple off one. But could just rot away in there and cause a leak so the vacuum doesnt lift anymore, thats my guess.

Im pretty sure I got one if needed.

If the "nipple" is made out of the same type pot metal as door handles, I know why it broke. That would so explain my problem I will try to sneak outside and look.

Just went out and took a look. The lower part of the throttle opener makes no contact with the throttle linkage. Could not tell exactly how it is supposed to go but have a couple spare carb assemblies to look at tomorrow to clear this up.

Well the nipple is made out of the same plastic as the rest of the casing. Go figure!

It looks to me that it shouldnt have any contact with the linkage that way it doesnt hang it up and keep the throttle somewhat open.

Mine just sits right below it, almost touching but not quite.

Hope this helps

Thanks MattG, that was one of the conclusions I came up with in the dark with a flashlight. It either sat above or below the throttle linkage, I just could not see any wear indicators on the metal to verify which one it was. I did notice my throttle linkage was rather tight and dirty which may be why the throttle opener actuator got thrown off.

Just reread the the thread and realized what "nipple" implied. Hell, I was thinking it was refering to the actuator. Now I know why it broke, it's plastic. Or was it still being refered to as Bakelite back then?

For historical purposes, bakelite was always brown.
