bonez cat replacement pipe or cat coneverter??

Well, I know my cats done, whenever I rev to whatever rpm when it comes down to idle, the cat goes duhduhduh(say that fast and it sounds like that). So, I have smog coming up on the 1st of June. Should I get a catalytic converter or the bonez cat pipe?? I plan on getting a header in the future(long time) and I know the bonez pipe wont bolt up to the rb header I want to get sometime...so I figured I could have a shop cut the bonez pipe then weld the flange or whatever back on to the right specs so it can bolt up to the header. Bonez pipe or cat converter?? People with the bonez pipe, any gain in power?

I have the bonez cat replacement presilencer pipe. You do get a nice boost in performance, horsepower and gas mileage, without the bother and expense of a header - the presilencer pipe bolts right up to the stock header and cat back exhaust. And the exhaust tone with the stock muffler is perfect, in my opinion, a nice throaty rumble unlike the tinny sound you get with a header.

It's inexpensive (about $150 complete with the gaskets and shipped from an RX-7 performance shop in Texas, forgot their name) and takes just an hour or two to install, or take out and replace if you need your cats for inspection.

Best bang for the buck upgrade I've ever done.

Ray

Allright ray. I know the sight. Its rx7.com. It seems since you got it the price has rose...250 with the gaskets now. Allright, I will probably get that

I was talking about the "bonez race pipe", a replacement pipe with an in line presilencer. $125 for my car but only $75 for yours:

http://rx7.com/store/rx7/saexhaust.html

Plus bolts, gaskets and shipping of course.

You must be looking at the Bönez Performance Converter System, a replacement pipe that includes the cat. I little closer to smog legal I suppose, but I don't know about performance for that product. You might want to see about what they will pass up in L.V.

PS, the rx7.com store people say their race pipe replaces only "the main cat" but it replaces all three on mine.

The bonez cat system is a very good system. If I remember it replaces all 3 cats, the 2 mono cats and the main cat. It flows very well also.

If the law changes down here in the land of the free, or if my conscience and the exhaust fumes start to get to me, I'm going to spring for one of those bonez cat systems.

The replacement presilencer pipe is definately a poor man's solution, cheap to buy and maintain (I've had the same pipe on three different GLSs over the last five years). It also produces a great sound with the stock muffler, a bit more of a rumble than stock but not loud or obnoxius, kind of reminds me of my old MGB.

So it's a cheap and easy upgrade, but like everything else, you get what you pay for: In this case, an exhaust system that is not as friendly to the environment as it could be.

My only "justification" is the obvious and extreme violation of emmissions standards that I see out on the highway every day, especially by the truckers. I'm keeping my 23 year old car on the road, in good efficient operating condition - a two seater that is always filled at least to half capacity (think about all those pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans running around essentially empty all the time).

The truckers and SUV drivers, in contrast, are running their relatively new and often poorly maintained vehicles into the ground, producing hundreds of times more pollution for their personal comfort or so they can make a profit for themselves.

OK, OK, so I lost my own argument. I'll put my order in for my bonez cat system this week.

Oh, I see Ray. Thanks. Maybe I'll get that after smog or I dont know. I think Im going to get the converter pipe system they have...not the race pipe, As I still need to pass here. I know I can pay extra to pass somewhere, but whatever...maybe, just wouldn't want to get caught.

I seem to have read a claim somewhere that this provides 2/3 of the performance gain as headers.... any truth to this statement?

The race pipe makes a big difference in power and gas mileage gains over the stock cats, that's why I've gotten in the habit. I'd like to know how the bonez cat system compares to the bonez race pipe, anybody have any experience with this?

As far as using a race pipe with the stock header vs using an RB header and exhaust, a friend has the RB system plus a second gen coil set up (my coils are stock) in his 85 GS. We test each other's cars from time to time, he might have a slight edge but if so it isn't much. Also I like the way mine sounds better, a deeper throaty sound.

Here's a photo of the bonez race pipe installed, it bolts right up to the stock header and stock cat back exhaust system:

No, but then I don't get tested. I've known some people to switch in the race pipe after they pass using the cats, which is another nice thing about this set up.

Well, I'm going to take the smog test tomorrow with the stock cat and exhaust. If I pass then I will buy the bonez race pipe, put that on, and when the time comes for smog test again, i'll put the old system back on.

TT, while I might have brought this idea up, I am not suggesting it. You are a 16-17 year old kid driving around in a sports car with what will be a slightly more noticeable than stock exhaust note - ie you are a red flag for the local police. The fines for this kind of thing are very expensive.

Thank you Ray, But I really have a dream tahts involved with cars if its autocrossing but i really want to do road racing. Plus, I dont go over th speed limit much and I got a radar detector..lol. . Im going to test in a hour. One of my friends already left the worst influence on me when we were sliding every corner in his 84 gs when I got rides before I got a license..He know notices, But Im a great driver and know what can happen. I ususally just accelerate to the speed limit asap then stop.

Ok well, I got the bonez race pipe in today and put it on. I love it. It's so worth it. The sound is amazing with the RB muffler. Really low at idle. A lot more power too. I can feel the differnece and it's totally quicker. Totally worth it. Maybe I can post a video sometime.

Alright, I'll try and get pics tonight..late, maybe. If not, tomorrow. That's true Ray. I couldn't believe how heavy the old converters were. Probably as heavey as my old stock muffler. The pipe weighs only like 7 pounds. Very pleased with the bonez race pipe.

I'll post some pics for you. There's writing on the side of it that says "flows" and points that direction of how the gases should flow.

I have never seen a stock exhaust to start with. Does it bolt to the stock exhaust manifold and to the stock muffler?
