Bonez Cat

I tried to hijack someone elses thread, but realized that I should probably make my own because I have a lot more in depth questions. I plan on replacing my stock cats with the bonez cat for 245 at:

http://www.rx7.com/store/rx7/saexhaust.html

Now, like I've mentioned before, I'm not to great with cars but I like to think I know "enough" to hold a decent coversation about them. With this new cat, most of the exhaust places around here are charging me an arm and a leg to install with the pipe and the rated muffler (poo). I have an aftermarket muffler I had on my old 300zx that should work just fine for the job. I'm pretty sure I can bolt in the cat to the manifold without much difficulty, and can even do a little welding if need be.

Now my main concern is from the cat back. How would one go about attaching a pipe and run it to the muffler where it could be clamped down. It looks like it would be pretty difficult to clamp down any pipe over the cat. Would you just weld a pipe right to it directly? Sorry if this question is very newbish, but I really have no idea and would like to avoid being charged rediculous amounts of money if it's something I can do alone.

Note: I have an 85 12A GS

The stock midpipe should bolt right up to the back of the Bonez cat.....which is a great unit by the way.

If your gonna attach an aftermarket muffler, youll need to remove the stock muffler and cut off the pipe that goes into the muffler. Then, weld the aftermarket muffler in its place and fab up some mounting hangers in the back corners. Then just reinstall like the stocker.
Its not that hard to do,if you dont want to to all the work any muffler shop should charge you a minimal fee,if you do all the prep.Just drive or tow it to the shop with everything ready so all they have to do is lift the muffler in place, weld the inlet pipe and weld a couple hangers in place.

Haha I'm sorry, I suppose I should have been more descpriptive about my situation. I just bought the car a few weeks ago and so far I love it. However, it came without any muffler at all and the pipe from the cat back looks to be in very rough shape. Now this is the good part, the pipe isn' even connected to the cat at all. It's about 1cm away from it and only lined up about half way. So most of the exhaust spews out from under the car and some make it out through the lame-tipped pipe in the back ( I know, I know......tips....) I've gotten tired of smelling exhaust with my windows open and not to mention the noise. So all in all I am going to try to use an entirely new pipe. Would it be that hard to install a new pipe altogether? Is there anywhere I can purchase this elusive "midpipe?"

The whole system just hangs on rubber mounts.I would bet you can pull the rear section forward/sideways to bridge the 1cm gap and bolt the system up.
The factory mid pipe is expensive to buy new,itd probably be cheaper to have a shop bend a new one and weld on your aftermarket muffler.
Unless there are holes in it,you can reuse the old midpipe. It probably just looks crappy, but it might be OK structuraly. You should pull the midpipe and rear pipe so you can inspect their condition, then determine if you wanna weld your new muffler to it,or have an all new pipe made to connect the cat to the muffler.

Yeah the pipe looks a little bleak. I don't know how the car could be so clean underneath, and the pipe so rusted out and crappy looking. I dont think the piece to connect the pipe to the cat is even there, I'll have to wait till tomorrow to check it all out. If worse comes to worse I can have some new pipe bent, I'm sure my stepbrother knows someone. THanks for the help dude.

Also, does the new cat automatically come with the gaskets, or should I use purchase the ones for 15 at the bottom. This is more or less for anyone that has ordered from that site before.

Sorry for the double post, but I also need to know about this air pipe thingy that connects to the stock cat. Will that be neccessary with the bonez cat, and is there something already installed to connect it with?

Well after going down under today, I discovered that there is no air thingy at all connected to the stock cat, and the hole is welded shut by whoever owned it before me. Is that bad?

That pipe is from the smog pump and air control valve up under the hood. Helped the stock cat clean up the exhaust a bit more. Is your emissions all there still? I think the air pipe was exclusive to the stock cat so your bonez one shouldn't require it. Someone plz correct me if i am wrong! Is the pipe crimped off or missing completely??

The bonez does have an air inlet pipe.

Well my stepbrother said he might know someone that will fab me a mid pipe for cheap so thats no worry. Now I just have to decide if I really want to fork over 250 bucks for the bonez cat.

Oh well that sucks about that air pipe thingy. Its totally cut off up by the first cat thingy, and its welded shut on the main cat. I dont think it was welded shut where it was cut though. If its open could that cause a vacuum leak? Also could this be a reason why my car kinda chugs a little when I stop accelerating and drive at a constant speed? God I'm getting tired of this crazy rotary exhaust stuff. Blows my mind. But I'd really like to get this fixed, its a blast to cruise around in.

I am selling the cat because of the 13brew engine and drive train transplant. 350 horses to the rear wheels. Heres what is done so far.
