Unhappy bogging question (plz help)

i just bought an awesome 83, 7 for 150 bucks, because he couldnt get it to run, i installed a fuel pump, and it fired up and ran perfect, but. unless you go into the throttle really easy, it will bog , and when it is not warmed up all the way you can not let the clutch out without it stalling, even if you ride it. i have no idea whats going on, plz help.

1st, welcome to the forum, and the Darkside, 2nd, provide more details.

Was this an oem pump replacement? Since it came with a filter, I'm guessing that it's not oem. One filter is sufficient. How long had the engine sat without running? Is the engine/carb/intake, etc., still stock?

We can help you figure out your problem, but you need to help us with more details. In my sig line is a link to the FSMs. Download the 82-83 edition for your car, along with either the 84-85 edition for more details. A seperate carb manual is in the listing also, dl that one too.

I bought an '83 12A a few months ago that had been sitting for 13 years. It would not idle but would run if I could get it up to about 4-5K rpms. The previous owner had installed a new fuel pump & filter, which didn't fix the problem. I rebuilt the carburetor and this fixed it. I'm assuming the primary jets or some of the air/fuel passages assocciated with them were gummed up or clogged from sitting so long.

The bogging sounds like a problem with the accelerator pump. As for the warm up issue, are you sure your choke is working correctly. I would take a very good look at the carb if I were you. I rebuilt mine and it really wasn't that hard.

Agreed, check that the accel pump is working. Also do a check that the choke is working right. But more than likely the accel pump isint working right.

well, no i dont use the choke, when i putt the choke on when its cold out it dies, and will not start with choke on, i have to pump it 3 times and it fires right up, i just started driving it last night, and it is fine when it is warmed up, but when you first give it gas i get the bog, and when the secondary part of the carb kicks in when i romp on it it will bog also, i have noticed a problem with the fuel tank, it has a leak somewhere up on top, i do not kno if its a hole in the tank or a leaky fuel line, do i have to remove the tank, or is their a trap door like the second gen, it also has fireball coils. everything other than that is all stock on the car, but the fuel pump i bought is a higher output model that cost 3 more dollars then the stock replacement.

thanks for the help. and i could use some sugestions for the gas tank.

You may want to wait for the rotary to warmup before you romp on it. Cracks have been know to develop in the rotor housings at the trailing plug holes because of this.

Maybe someone can help you adjust your choke. I never used one.

The tank usually rusts out on the seam at the middle of the tank. I decided to junk my old tank, but some people go with a coating for the inside. Im sure the coating works well, but I enjoy knowing I have a solid tank.

I used to just keep my gas under 1/2 a tank and It was good.
