Beast 12a

How much power do you think a maxed out N/A 12A make? By maxed out i mean the meannest baddest 12A ever built. N/A and no NOS. Ceramic apex seals, peripheral ported, perfectly tuned beast carburator (probably a giant webber, like 51mm or something), freeflowing exhaust, the works. How much power?

I would guess that the GT3 Rx-7's would be the most maxed out 12a out there. I do not know the HP numbers though, must be north of 200, Anybody?

GTU teams were making on the order of 300hp at the flywheel in 1980 with the flat-slide injection. After that they were required to run a carb instead, which cut them to 280hp or so, but by modifying the D-shape of the intake port to a square shape they were able to regain the lost 20hp.

So THEORETICALLY you can see 320hp. Maybe more.

BTW this was with carbon-aluminum apex seals... the ceramics don't do anything for revability, just longevity. At super high revs you can expect an engine life of about 6 hours or so with the carbon-aluminum jobbies. ( !! )

I am going to post a vid of my SP next week and i am running a beast 12 a in that so keep your eyes peeled for it. I am going to brek it in this weekend. I only have like 4 niles on it so i want to get about 75 on it by sat then i will pull higher rpm than 4k which is what i have been driving it at. Any ways its got streight pipes and thats it so its kinda loud but i am sure you guys will enjoy it. But i figure mine shouls make about 250 or so but we will see. I want to get it dynoed later on next month.

Rotortuner, you might want to put a bit more than 75 mi. on the engine before you start to drive it hard. Aren't you supposed to give it ~1k miles to let the seals get fully formed. Just a suggestion, sounds like a badass engine, I'd hate to hear that it got ruined b/c you ran it too hard too soon.

Ya 1k is ideal. But This thing is not very driveable in the conventional sense, like i cant drive it every day to school so that means i only can take it out once or twice a week. Where we live here there is no dyno so it has to be road miles. 1k miles is doable on street ported motors and stuff but this monster will have to do with 100 or so. And then i will start to step is up slowly but iw should break in by then. I am running a rich mixture and a rich premix also, so those factors should help. Right now it idles at about 1700 but i think when it fully broken in and tuned i can get it down to 12-1400 idle. But any ways i am not planning on going out and pulling a few 9k shifts quite yet. but once the 100 are on it i wills tart breing it to like 6 then 7 and drive it ther until maybe 200 miles then start bring it out higher. Most of the internals arent brande new so it more like jsut making the side seals especialy conform to the side plates, which doesent take an especialy long time. Any ways i will get some vid for you guys.

I think around 315hp is max for a 12a. My neighbor used to race 1st gens, he had one with 280hp, it had a periphrial port on it, he said he could have put it up to 315 with a 52mm carb on it, but they never got around to doing it. Hopefully he can help me out if something goes wrong with my car

Just curious. Where did you get that number from?
Our E Prod motor made 126hp at the flywheel. and 196 RWHP.
It's a street port 12a with a webber 48 (or 51? can't remember) and a race exhaust.

Just wondering because I've heard of a couple of other engines making this power but have not seen them.

Later,
Mike

I assume you mean 226hp at the flywheel?

I'll search for the info... it's something gleaned from the RX-7 FB mailing list a couple years ago.

Hmm... I wonder if your talking about when me and Dale where arguing about that motor on the FB list.
He didn't believe me and told me to bring my buddies EP car to cali. I live in Atlanta. lol
