backfiring

81 gsl, i was backfiring whenever i went to high a rev and shifted and it would puff out black smoke, so i adjusted the idle screw to make it leaner, know when im crusing down the high way and i take my foot off the gas to turn or what ever it backfires numerous times. what the problem

is there a way to fix it, i cant be too rich, cause i cant idle very well and its way above what it should be

about 1200-1500, when it idles, it takes a while to warm up, even when its hot outside

Adjust the air mixture screw until you're in the 750-850 range and see how it runs

i cant get it to where it will idle that low, i tried and it cuts off, i think im gonna have to remove the rats nest, we allready pluged one hose to which made it a whole lot better than it was, it used not to idle at all

How are your float levels? Mine used to not idle at all too until we put new floats in the carb then adjusted the air mixture. Sounds like you have a vacuum leak. If you don't have to deal with smog/emissions then go ahead and remove the rats nest

yeah, we just rebuilt the carb, floats are good, how can you get to the rats nest removal tutorial, last i looked the link was broken

Not sure honestly. FAQ section is the only place I know. If you do get rid of the rats nest let me know because I need one of the solonoids
