ATTN: CALIFORNIA GSL-SE owners.... How did you get your GSL-SE to pass Emission?
How did you get your GSL-SE To pass.
My mechanic says that my CAT converter is still good the original CAT, but its giving me
MEAS
CO = 9.2% GP = 2.36% Max = .86%
HC = 599 GP = 316 Max = 141
O2 = 0.02 GP = n/a Max = n/a
C02 = 11.70 GP = n/a Max = n/a
He says that the O2 is going down that means your CAT is still good. You can smell the exhaust outside and a little from the inside.
ACV diaphrams were change, TPS is good, CLean Fuel Injectors, CAT is still original (Non-Rotary mechanic claims its good), You can smell the exhaust, 2 month old spark plugs, spark plug wires are new, msd blaster 2 coils for both leading and trailing.....
How did you guys do it?

I had to swap back all of my stock setup (stock exhaust, air pump, air filter).. I know that if your ACV isn't up to par, you can definately smell the gas in the rear. I had to borrow a working one and instantaneously I noticed what a big difference it was. If you don't hear any pieces loose in the cat, I'm pretty sure it's still good. There are other ways to pass the sniffer if you know the right people.

10 years of owning 3 SE's never had any problems passing smog. I just put back the stock exhaust system every 2 years when it's that time. Make sure everything is on there and working right. Give it a tune up, change the oil and run the car hard right before you put it up onto the sniffer.

Well, my mechanic said that he could have passed me before.... but I took it to another mechanic that claimed to be an Rx-7 specialist and he tested my car, now its a Gross Polluter, the state has my car's Spec.
Before my mechanic said he could have just hooked up a different car that can pass the test and say its mine, but since the state has the info now and its been declared a Gross Polluter, he can't do that anymore.
I'm really stumped, I was also thinking putting a 660cc Greddy injector to lean it out that way, but its a really EXPENSIVE GUESSING MOVE..... But For sure I'm getting the BONEZ CATALYTIC CONVERTER.... The Variable Resistor I'm wondering if its broken the manual say leave it to the dealer to adjust. I know my Throttle Position Sensor is good, because when the engine is rev up and I press the TPS the engine Decelerates.... I recently exhange my Air Temp Sensor.
thanks
Marques

i hate smog checks
Tried to get an 85 SE pass smog just last year, and it didn't want to. The thing was, I got one of those lame "test only" notices, so I had to go to a "test only" shop which wouldn't touch the car. after taking it a few places to find someone who could help me out, we decided to just change the cat like the guy at the test-only place had said we probably needed to do. went back, had it looked at, it still didn't pass.
At this point, we took it to the 'referee' at the DMV, and got it written off for 2 years, so I have that long to get it to pass smog. of course, it might never pass, the state of California offered to "purchase my vehicle" for $47.
I don't know if you can take it to a ref unless you had a test-only notice, but it might be worth a try. 2 years is long enough to swap in a different motor at least, hey, think of it as an excuse to put a TII or 20b in it ; )

A few tips for future reference for those who may be needing to pass smog...me being one of them soon. First look into a place that will allow you to diagnoze the readings of your car without having the info processed. Besides a bad ACV, the air passage in the center housing of the engine that the ACV is actually pumping air into could be carboned up and or blocked. To look into this you will have to remove the intake manifold (upper and lower on the SE) Its the rectangular shaped port just bellow the center air intake passage. It exits out the 1/2" holes at the bottom in each exhaust port. You will also need to remove the exhaust manifold. If this is restricted there will not be enough air pumped into it to mix in with the exhaust and there will be increased emissions. Kinda like clogged arteries
Now freeing this up. I stuffed the exhaust ports with paper towels so dirt wont go back inside the engine. Now with that air passage use a coat hanger wire and pipe cleaning brushes and try to jam the crud sticking onto the insides down then forcing it out with compressed air repeatedly. This is also a good time to do the ATF trick before reassemblying.
Having a visual would help too Im sure.. I should spend some time in Area 51
