Anyway to tell if engine has been ported?

I have no documentation on my car and have been piecing together what’s been done to it.

With all of the performance mods, I am trying to see if there is anyway to tell if the engine has been ported without opening it up.

The car gets awful gas mileage around town, I am averaging around 12mpg, but it sure is fun to drive! The DHLA 48 definitely like to drink...

Pull the intake and exhaust manifolds off and look?

Should be easy enough to figure out if it's been ported just by comparing to pics on this site and others for stock photos.

Dells get terrible mileage in the city unless you drive it carefully and its really tuned well. I would bet its not ported. My Dell would see anywhere between 12 and 17 city and 24-25 on the highway drives. In the mtns, it was 10 to 12. Sure you aren't just having too much fun with the loud pedal? LOL! My nikki gets 19 - 24 depending on how much highway and about 12 in the mtns. It too can guzzle gas but its tuned leaner than the Dell was on the primaries.

Be aware if you pull the intake, it may require new coolant seals and you will need to drain coolant down some to avoid a mess. Pulling the exhaust would be the easiest and then use a camera probe thing to look around. You'd have to know what you are looking at also.

the stock intake ports are a rough casting, so if you pull the intake, and its all ground smooth, then its ported.

mileage has more to do with the carbs tune than the port though, and well your right foot

A quick thought; since exhaust header is 4 bolts and slide it to the side - that would give you an adequate look at the exhaust ports, and who in their right mind would bother to port the exhaust side and NOT port the intake...?

Still, pretty simple just to take a look for yourself. Let us know what you find. I'm sure others here with Dellorto carbs would be interested in your port configuration,

I bought one of the cheap Chinese WiFi-connectable borescope camera setups from Amazon for like $50 a while back, and it has paid for itself multiple times over. I have video of inside an Audi 2.7 twin-turbo 6-speed manual transmission bellhousing that I was thinking was the culprit to a problem about a year ago, and have loved the thing ever since.

That would be a super easy way to be able to see the ports up close and personal if you're so inclined, although a flashlight shone on the intake ports from the passenger's side of the engine bay will pretty much get you to the same point if your eyesight is good. No matter what, I'd agree with the sentiment that most likely it isn't ported. Unless you were told that the engine was rebuilt and ported, it's usually safe to assume the stock porting is still the configuration of the engine in almost every case.
