Anyone put 215-60/14 tires on the GSL-SE 5.5" wheels?
I am sorting through an '84 GSL-SE I recently picked up from my neighbor's cousin. Though the tires have near new tread, they sat flat for about 5 years, and need to be replaced. Finding tires that are good quality is harder than expected in the stock 205-60/14 size. BF Goodrich makes their Radial TA in 215-60/14. Has anyone put these on in this size who can give some feedback? Thank you in advance!!
Best,
Tim

They will rub during lock in the front. Not sure about the rear. 205 will rub the sway bar but not so bad.
I've seen them with 235s and even with 245s on the back........and they look awesome.....
This one has power steering, so the turning radius is already not very good and I don't want to ruin the tires...but I am still tempted because it will look great! However, I am a bit confused as to why the stock size of 205-60/14 rubs the sway bars when it is one of the recommended sizes for the GSL-SE.
My manual for the GSL-SE shows 205-60/14 or 175-70/14 or alternatively 195-65/14. I currently have 185-70/14 and it looks like there is a lot of room for a wider and maybe even taller tire. A tire comparison chart shows that the 215-60/14 is the same height as the 185-70/14 and about 1.2" wider. Anyone have further thoughts or input? I appreciate the input!! Thanks!
Stock tires on GSLSE was Pirelli P6, 205-60×14, using the stock wheels. This provided plenty of clearance under all conditions of bump and steering angle, and is the correct size for stock wheels. When people add a larger front stabilizer bar, it reduces the clearance by mere millimeters - so going with 215 width tires is likely to rub the stabilizer bar on full lock, but youre unlikely to notice it, as that position is achieved at low speeds, only, as in parking.
Give it a shot and take some pictures for us; I'm sure you're not the first to go wider, and a lot of modern tires these days have cantilever beads to protect custom rims from curb rash, making them very wide compared to stock.

Thanks for the input! I should get them set up this weekend, and will post a couple pictures. Looking forward to seeing it with the raised white lettering! Also, I sprayed the stock wheels, since the PO had used a wire brush on them to get the dirt off. It should all look pretty good when done. If the only time the tires rub is in a parking lot, I can live with that...
The power steering boxes had the same turning radius as manual, the difference is the power steering is a lot faster. Faster even than the fast FC rack and pinion (three port power).
Well, the slave cylinder went out, so it will be next weekend hopefully when I can post pics. Looks like the clutch master was replaced, but the PO didn't replace the clutch slave cylinder...my son was driving and lost the clutch completely. We were on the way to his shop, but made it back home and fortunately made every light along the way! He is pretty adept at shifting without a clutch, and only had one very minor grind on one downshift! VERY glad he was behind the wheel and not me!
Lock to lock and there is NO rubbing! My son did a drift with the wheel locked to see if the tire would rub, but it is all clear. These do give the car a nice look for sure!
I bought a set of Accellera Phi in that size on amazon for @110 ea and replaced the tires on my GSL SE right after I bought ita year ago. great tires and they have a smooth ride.
Well, what I learned when I typed Accelera Phi-R into Amazon is that there ARE a few choices in 205/60-14, so thank you for your post! I do like the 215/60-14 with the raised white lettering. I think it gives the car a more sporty look. I will say that the Radial TAs have a great ride, and really perform well on both wet and dry roads. I was surprised at how quiet and smooth they are on the freeway too!
Got to agree on the Accelera phi-r tires guys, my mechanic friend recommended them a few years ago so I bought a set for my RX7 when I got my new rims. I and I absolutely loved the ride so much that I bought a set of Accelera phi-r tires for my 2000 Acura RL and ****-canned the set of Goodyear tire I was running (and you can't beat the price either.)
Looks nice👌! Original suspension front and back? Have a 84gslse with racing beat springs, wondering if will rub with fender. Looks like you have between 3 to 4 inches clearance front top tire to fender. Nice set up.

The tires on my GSL-SE are 205/50/15, I have racing beat springs in front, but removed the RB springs in the rear and reinstalled OEM rear springs to improve ride quality (a concession to age, and bad back.) The attached photo gives a better view of wheel clearance, the rear wheels do have more clearance due to the stock rear springs.
Original but all new RB sways Front and rear, energy bushings everywhere front and back, all new other susp parts. Does not rub and i would not want it lower. I am considering a rack and pinion upgrade, where they replace even the crossmember and bolts in without mods. about 3K. I don,t like and want to control the oversteer. Can want to get snappy with it and would like to control that better. These are natural drift cars and are TONS of fun at that but this is a road car and is not abused.
