They were custom jobs. Pacific Avatar was/is a company where you drive your vehicle in, they get creative with the SawzAll, and you drive out in a vert. Whatever you want... Pickup Truck? Done... Bulldozer? Done... School Bus? Done...

So theoretically, 1st gen Verts could be any year, any trim level, and unknown in number made...

I don't see any lines lost in the pic of the red 81 on the link posted above by Pele. That's one good looking rag.
May have to make one when time allows.

 

The whole roof/hatch line is gone... Well at least drastically altered. It's a great looking 'Vert, but I like my hatch line so...
Targa for me

 

I like
