antennae
Can anyone tell me how to acess the power antennae on an 83 GSL? I can hear the motor run when I turn the radio on but it doesn't go up or down. I can't find any way to get to it and looked all over when I changed the rear shocks. The repair manual I have doesn't cover this at all.

Thanks mazdaverx713b. I will give it a try. The factory cassette deck ate some of my favorite tapes and until I replace it I would atleast like to listen to the radio. You gotta have tunes,

I replaced the antenna on my 83 gs a couple of months ago and ran into a couple of issues that hopfully you can avoid.
First, I never could get the antenna completely out by removing the panel where the speaker is. I ended up taking out the passenger tail light and it was much easier to remove.
Secondly, the factory antenna does not follow the standard wiring mechanism that after market antennas and radio use. If you are putting an after market deck in I would go ahead and replace the antenna which is a lot cheaper than a factory replacement anyway and will wire up to your new deck without difficulty.
hope that helps

Yes definately take out the passenger tail light, this makes it real easy. A real good and inexpensive power antenna is the one that used to be sold by radioshack (part number 12-1330A). They should still be available on ebay, I got a couple a few months ago for about $20 each.

Thanks for all the tips. I had to replace the right rear taillight a few months ago. Should have taken out the antennae then.John64 I am located in Quaker Hill, a little town just north of New London.I have an 83 fully loaded GSL wih 42k original miles on it. It was garaged for over 10 years (it was my dad's car). Had to replace the exaust (now wish I had bought headers) and had a lot of proplems with old fuel in the system but now runs fine. only modifications 8mm wires high output coils and KN airfilter which sounds nice when the 4bbl kicks in.

you should also bypass the factory amps and run new speaker wire to each speaker. replace the speakers while your doing that.
check my other threads in the foresale forum i have lots of useful things for first gens.

That power antenna WILL come out of the speaker hole. Just imagine you're a doctor delivering a baby. Can't force anything, just gotta find the right combination of moves.
I have 4 of the RS antennas stockpiled, but I think the standard $60 power antenna at Kragens will work too.

Got the antennae out, through the tail light hole.couldn't even touch it through the speaker hole. Maybe i can fix it if the gears aren't stripped. I hear the motor running so I know that's not the problem.JB Weld can fix almost anything.
