Alternators

Does anyone know the ampere ratings on the 2nd gen alternators? Are the 86-87 and 88-90 grouped similarly? Thanks.

75 amps, I'm pretty sure. I think both series are the same.

The '89-'91 TII alternators are grouped separately by ampere output which is 80 amps peak. It is also a relatively easy mod...here's the rest of the story....

Where's DF and his graphics when you need him?? It's been brought up before and I believe the answer was "yes", but I'm too sleepy to confirm that belief right now....yawn....anybody know the definitive answer? ie., who has done it themselves...none of this "I have a friend" stuff...

86-88 are 70 amps, while 89-91 have a different connector and 80 amp output

Heh, I've got a 55 amp 2nd gen alt. It works fine where an old stocker rated at 50 amps used to be. I don't even need to change my fuse.

'86-'88 = 70 amp.

'89-'91 = 80 amp.

'93+ = 100 amp.

These are stock numbers from the manufacturer

FD's use a serpentine belt system so making that work on a FB would be tough, the 80 amp 89-91 alt is more than enough power.

On my Cosmo alternator (serpentine belt) I bought a Racing Beat dual pulley and drilled the hole slightly larger to fit the larger diameter spline.

While I was at it, I had a smaller diameter dual pulley drilled and prepped for the same alternator, because it is not underdriven like the Racing Beat one.

Yea, that would do it. But then isn't there any issue with the fuseable links? The main one is rated at 80 amps, wouldn't putting a alternator bigger than that blow it constantly? Even if you swap to a FC fuseblock the main fuse is still 80 amps. Just a thought

I am switching to the FC fuseblock, & moved the battery to the passenger bin. I also got a "painless wiring" additional fuseblock to control all my accesories, and additional gauges, etc.

The Cosmo amp is rated at 90 amps, so considering the additional draw and upgraded (new) wiring, I should be fine.

Yea, sounds like your fine. I got a fc fuseblock a few weeks ago, but haven't taken the time to put it in yet. the fact that i'm kinda confused on how it is wired doens't help. oh well, thats a thread for another day.
