Adapter fitting woes for temp gauge sensor probe

1985 GSL-SE, 13B

So, I purchased a D1 Performance water temp gauge off of eBay, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=022 and I was told to get an adapter from ReSpeed http://mrcmfg.com/catalog/product_in...roducts_id=225 . However, little did I actually READ the product description, but it is for the oil sending unit, not for the stock water temp sending unit.

I'm looking to replace my stock sending unit of the water temp gauge with the aftermarket one. The thread size of the aftermarket one is 1/8" NPT. I have no idea what the stock sending unit is. Is it M16 x 1.5, like this one thread said?
https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-archive-71/engine-water-pump-housing-choke-sensor-thread-size-103651/

I've done searching but that's the only link I've come across. I'm not looking to drill into my water pump housing, or wherever, I'm looking to replace stock with aftermarket. Does anyone have any idea what to do, where to go/buy, to get an adapter for the stock hole and aftermarket sender?

Do you really need a special Coolant Temp Sensor in place of the OEM unit? Is this something that others should look at?

Hmm, you're always asking such strange questions, y'know?

My car, I'll do what I like. If you remember, I installed MR2 e-fans into my car. I'm liking a temp gauge that has actual NUMBERS for me to read off of, to ensure that my fans are properly setup, too.

Call me crazy, but I like to, I dunno, SEE actual numbers of what my car is showing when it comes to engine temps, among other vitals. And, I believe I asked for an answer regarding the fitting adapter, not "Do you think I should go with an aftermarket temp gauge?" .

Anyone else have an answer that pertains to my question?

if you wanted to you could just keep your stock one..and then get a water temp adaptor..that goes right inbetween your radiator hose..you cut your top in two and just put it in there...

i use the stock set up as is, i also have a sesnor in the lower rad hose pipe to give me readings on a aftermarket temp gauge and a sesnor in the top rad pipe to switch my electric fan (this has a zirgo digital temp read out too) so everywhere is covered, if you have the oil sandwich plate get a gauge for that as oil temp is a good one to have ive found

pinoy --- Y'know, I've COMPLETELY forgot how a lot of people get that tube for the top radiator hose and radiator.

mpk --- Why do you have one in the lower hose? Y'know, I've never heard of someone having one there as well.

EDIT: The tube that goes into the radiator hose, where would I get that? Strictly online or maybe in an auto parts store? There is a performance parts store in my area, but not open on Sunday for me to find out if they carry such an item. I'm liking this product before I head out next week out of state on a long haul.

i already had the temp for the fan switch in the top and wanted to moniter the whole system, i can see water inlet temp (bottom hose via a aftermarket gauge) engine water temp (stock set up) and water outlet (top hose) as you only get a true reading from the top hose once the thermostat has opened this way i can see if the thermostat fails, i can also change the temp my fan switchs on so if i see my intake rising say on a track or drag day i can just drop the temp on the fan switch

Ah, okay. Well, I'm just wanting a way to read off water temp without having to drill into my water pump housing. I've already changed my water pump a long time ago and I'm not wanting to rip it off again anytime soon.

But, if that's the only way to do so, I'll just put that thing into the top of my hose. I mean, my fans work just great, but I would like to ensure they are kicking on how I'd like them to. And, also, get actual visual readings of the temperature.

So, that top connector will do me just fine?

After doing more searching around, came across one website found in this one recent thread:

https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/mechanical-water-temp-752127/

The part - http://www.autometer.com/cat_accesso...il.aspx?vid=52

Unless someone else has a better solution, I believe this would be the only route for me currently.

After speaking with Kent, I found out that I can use the plug that is found at the bottom of the center iron (below the oil filler tube), and use a metric adapter (probably M10) to fit my aftermarket sensor (1/8 NPT).

I'll take a peek at AutoZone to see if they do sell those adapter kits, like John said he got his from.
