AC removal

I have an 84 GSL-SE and my air conditioner doesnt work, the pump doesnt kick in, its not even getting electricity, so i want to remove it. Is there anythign special to do when takign this off, or can i just take off the belt, unplug hte wires and pull it out. Also are there any otehr parts that i can take to lose some weight or gain some power that i can take of that are used with the ac that i wont be needing

On my '83, I removed the A/C compressor and bracket, all hosing to the firewall and the front matrix and then removed the condensor and matrix in front of the radiator also. The only thing left from the A/C system is the core inside the car because I just haven't had time to tear out the underside of my dash venting to remove it. Oh, and I also removed the pulley for the A/C on the eccentric shaft since it just bolts to the other two that are there and put the bolts back in though I don't think they are needed. Of course I don't promote releasing the freon from the system into the atmosphere so do so at your own risk. Remember, the system could be under pressure still and that pressure can harm you if you're near the hose when it releases!!

pull the compressor/drier/condensor/evap and you'll shave some weight.

the stuff behind the dash CAN be removed while leaving the dash in place. it's just a pain in the *** laying in the passenger side floor board digging around and unbolting the stuff.

if you want to retain your heater, you can take the evaporator out of it's shell, and place the shell back in to keep all of your ducting in tact.

i hate to restore an extremely old thread, but i had a couple questions about ac removal, i've had my compressor in the engine bay but it hasn't even had a belt in 2 years so....i thought i'd take it out anyways, i know i can take off the lines, but isn't part of it connected to the radiator, if so how can i plug it or what would i have to do...and inside, taking out the evaporator, can my heater still run if i take that off?...thanks

When I removed my AC, I undid the lines to the compressor (make sure there is no fluid in it, mine had none) and took them off. Took off the compressor and bracket, took out the condenser and a little cylinder thing in front of the radiator IIRC. Never went under the dash for anything, and my heater still works.

+1 on Jeezus. If there is any doubt on fluid in the system bring it to an ac shop and get it drained.

Yeah, I left my condensor in the dash because its a pain to remove it and its not in the way of the heater working at all, the air just flows through with no effect.

Me too, the condenser only weighs a pound or two, hardly worth removing. Who knows, I might want AC again some day, but I don't miss it now, or the maintenance.

Gets rid of a lot of clutter under the hood. While you are at it, why not ditch the PS?

Well, the AC was removed on my car, so I'll just plead with anyone removing theirs. I'm in the south, summer's coming, and I hate to install an old, exposed system if someone else has one that's been freshly cracked open and disconnected. If anyone has a newly-opened system that's been removed, I could give it a new home.

finally got to take that crap off today, took me a while just figuring out where everything ran to...making sure what i could take off and what i couldn't turned out very simple except for the line plugs near the firewall on the passanger side.... .....but some wd-40 and about 5 minutes made my work a LOT easier i took out the little radiator looking thing, and that cylinder, don't know what that was for, took out lines and compressor of course, the only thing i couldn't take off was the bracket, i have one nut in it left the big 19mm that's near the plugs just ran out of time :P, anyways questions....that wiring that goes from the compressor to the cylinder thing, and back through the firewall where the lines go inside, and there's a little plug near the drivers fender...can i take that off and will it hurt anything else?....the ground that's bolted to the ac bracket where can i put it? and last but not least, after taking out the lines i now have two pipes coming out through the firewall should i plug those, or go under the dash and remove the other thing w/e it's called? believe that's it :P thanks.

that's a good idea, but i think i'm just gonna take the condenser** or w/e it is out, since hell i haven't even had a damn belt towards the ac in about a year or two so i said screw it take it all out, won't need it :p ......it's cool enough with 2/55 air conditioner....as long as my heater works in the winter, i'm all set
