85 12a needs Help
I purchased a 12a that I was told was running good & strong when it had been removed(was replaced with a V8), it had been sitting for about 6mths outside under a cover. When I finnished installing it, it would not start so I gave it the ATF treatment. Engine started first time BUT.........
#1 it will not idle under 1500 without stalling,
#2 refuses to restart when hot. When I first started it up I did not disconect the exhaust, I did shut it down & disconnected it but now my cat is glowing!!! I have done the following.
1. Compression seems to be around 55 on all 6 seals.
2. I double checked all pipes for vacum leaks(wd40) & found none.
Any suggestions as to how I continue.
Many Thanks

have you tried to rebuild the carb?
have you checked your timing?
your cat is glowing because it is now clogged , disconnect and make a "test pipe" to fit where they were.
the compression is low , but it is also steady so you should be fine
peace

bad timing makes it difficult to start, it will give the combustion chamber the spark at the incorrect part of the rotation of the motor, sometimes firing against the rotation, sometimes right out the exhaust.

If so, you probably ruined it and clogged it. You're supposed to remove it when "cleaning it out" after an ATF Treatment.
Do as it was recommended earlier, and replace the cats with a "test pipe" to get it running. You Really have to drive the car on the highway (smoke filled-high speed runs) to get it really cleaned out.
Your compression does sound low, but that could be because either it's not cranking fast enough, or because the seals need to expand after sitting so long.
Start it, and drive it on a long (preferably deserted) stretch of highway, keeping the RPM nice and high.

I know should have removed it Will let you know what happens after I redo the timing. I did notice yesterday when I took it for a run that it was acting rough on acceleration, & yes plugs are clean & fuel filter is new.
Thanks. I really need to get to the bottom of this, else the wife says car has to go !!!!!!!!!

You don't have emissions in Reading? Several of my relatives in PA have to get their cars to pass smog, but they are in the Phili area. Was this just recent that emissions were cast away?
