SC 84 12a MT slapping noise from Engine

Okay I have no idea as to what is going on. This is my only means of transportation.

Last Tuesday I went over some railroad tracks and thought I blew a tire. Made a similar noise when you're riding on a blown tire.

Pulled over and checkec the tires and it's not.

The motor was not seized and could still be cranked up and driven but I chose not too so I wouldn't seize the motor.. Any suggestions? Any ideas? I am lost and I am broke (isn't that how it always is?) I know the motor will crank but it's like something is loose or slapping inside. Is this something I can fix and work on myself or am I going to have to go sell body parts just for my car?

It does not make the noise while trying to start it but only when the engine is actually running.

HELP please..

Theresa

Can you describe the noise more? Is it metallic or anything? My first thought was cracked/broken exhaust that could sound like a slapping noise.

See if you knocked your distributor cap loose. If it is not properly aligned, then the contacts will bang against the rotor and make a racket.

Check the belt tensions.

Also, make sure none are split lengthwise. A separated belt getting ready to fail will make a hell of a racket, and depending on where the split is, might not be immediately visible while the engine's not running.

It sounds like plastic or rubber hitting inside. It's weird I have never experienced it before. It doesn't sound like metal hitting on metal

Did you check the distributor cap?

check a wheel-well liner too, sometimes that'll hit. if it's falling into the rubber.

is this plate on the intake just below the carb? if it's what i'm thinking of, i think it would leak exhaust gas if it was no longer sealing to the intake. pix would be helpful.

Sounds like a block-off plate over the air control valve mounting hole.
