81WideMariah's Turbo build thread....

Since I'm just getting started with my 12a Turbo build, I figured I might as well as start a build thread. I will list my plans below including my current parts list in case you want to play along at home!

Plans:

Re-Speed R&P Kit 15:1 quick ratio
Re-Speed Coil-overs
Stainless Brake and Clutch lines
Rebuild and Large Streetport 12a (porting to be performed by Kilo Racing)
Goopy 3mm Apex Seals and Solid Corner Seals
Ray Jay T40B trubo (thanks Joe!) running between 10-15 psi
Boost Prepped Weber 45 DCOE (prepped by Robert@Rotary Shack)
Rotary Shack Turbo Carb Hat
Rotary-Works FMIC and Pipping Kit
38mm Ray Jay external wastegate
3" Turbo Back Exhaust into current Magnaflow muffler
MSD 6A powering 2GCDFIS
Locked Dizzy at 10 degrees BTDC with 10 degree split
Coolmist water or water/meth injection
XTD Stage 2 Kevlar Clutch
MSD 2225 Fuel Pump
Mallory 4309 RRFPR
Run a 5/16" return line back to tank
-6 AN Line and fitting in engine bay
Strip and paint engine bay Gloss Black
Re-Wire Entire car using "painless" wiring harness
Relocate Battery to passenger side storage bin
Newly Rebuilt 12a Trans
Aluminum 3 row Radiator
Black Magic 180 E-Fan

Parts Already Installed:
8.5" Aluminum flywheel
4.44 gears
Koni Reds
All Polly bushings in front
Miata short shifter

Below are pics of my car followed by progress so far. Thus far I've pulled the carb to ship to Robert@Rotary Shack for prepping, and intake mani to ship to my good friend Steve@RDP Motorsports, for coating. He has a really awesome powdercoating process that looks just like chrome! I'll probably be sending him a few more parts as I pull things apart. This weekend I'll be pulling the engine and trans and start tearing down the engine. I'll try to post more pics as things progress.

Lookin nice. One of these days we need to meet up. I'd love to check out your build.

Body work looks sharp! Are you going to the swap meet tomorrow in Bithlo? Check out the SE Fourm if you haven't heard about it.

I can't make it to the swap meet.... probably a good thing since I'm sure I'd find way too many things I "need" and totally blow my project budget. I'm definitely up for meeting up... I used to come out to all the CenFla meets when they were still getting together (who knows, maybe they still are), but between working 40+hrs/wk and class 12/hrs a week... free time is "limited."

If I'm not mistaken Black Dragon stocks a nice widebody kit for SA's... looks really similar to DanYoung's

Well... made a little more progress over the weekend. Engine is out of the car, and mounted on the engine stand. Waiting for a package from Mazdatrix that has my flywheel nut wrench and stop. Then it's time to tear her down. Hoping to have everything ready to go to Kilo by this weekend! Here's a couple more pics of the carnage...

Time for an UPDATE!!!!

Wow it's been a while since I first posted this build thread. Anybody that's been following any of my other posts will know I spent some time rebuilding/porting an engine for another friends project. Now that I'm finished with that I can get back to my mess.... err, project.

Few things have changed since last update:

Kilo wanted too much for porting, so I traded porting my friends engine for a compressor, die grinder, and bits... so I'll be doing my own porting.

My DCOE45 wasn't able to be boost prepped due to some odd float bowl vents. So, I traded in towards a new 47 OER from Rob@Rotary Shack... ( I really don't want to hear about anybody's issues with Rob, he's good in my book, and that's all I care about, so please don't clutter up my thread.)

I called in a favor from my buddy Steve, the owner of RDP Motorsports, in N. Ohio. I had him Black-Chrome Powdercoat my turbo compressor housings, and my intake manifold. THEY LOOK INSANE!!

I've also decided to for-go the painless wiring kit and just strip my harness, and replace any questionable wires. This decision came after realizing that I would have to do some fairly involved engineering to keep the use of the pop-up headlights and the steering column stalks to control the lights and wipers.

Now... on with the pics!

This is the engine bay currently.... I stripped everything and sanded it down, then followed it up with a few coats of paint. Believe it or not, I painted the engined bay using spray cans, three cans of Dupli-Color Semi Gloss. It came out really well... you can also see the beginning of the Respeed R&P kit. Just waiting to finish the wiring, and then I'll finish installing the kit.

Speaking of wiring......

This is the view from the driver's seat... it's one helluva mess. I was a little overwhelmed when I started, but after spending a few hours with the wiring schematics and a roll of masking tape and a sharpie... it's looking a little less daunting. I'll be posting pics of the finished harness in the near future.

This pic shows that I also removed the blower motor, evaporator, heater core, and AC handling unit. I figured since, the AC wasn't working, and the heater core was leaking, that I might as well tear it all out and simplify things a bit. Besides if I ever decide to put it back in there's always a first gen guy ripping his AC out that will sell it to me cheap.

This is the wiring that I was able to remove from the harness that goes behind the center console... there was A LOT!

And the last pic for this update...... I shot of things to come!

here's a couple more pics. This is an old-skool Ray-Jay turbo... .9 on the hot side and what is about equivalent to a 60mm on the cold side.... should move some air!!

BTW... this is the same turbo as pictured above in my original post... I just coated/polished the compressor housing, and high temp coated the turbine housing, and inspect the cartridge... it's perfect!

81WideMariah,

Looks like you need a better image resizer, that doesn't produce watermarks.

I use the ones below:

If you're still using XP, then just add the Image Resizer Power Tool.

If you're running Win7, then get this version.

If you need something a little more versatile...

Get Infranview - It's free and will resize your pictures quick and easy, along with other photo editing tools.

Thanks guys... I actually had to convert the pics. I used my Nikon D40 and didn't notice that it was on Raw NEF format, so i just did a quick google search for an NEF converter and came up with that... After spending th whole day in the garage, I was too lazy to go back out and snap more pics.
