Unhappy 8 teeth VS 11 teeth

Just got a used starter with 11 teeth and found out my old starter has 8. Is there ANY way to make the 11 teeeth starter work? Can I swap the old 8 tooth into the good 11 tooth starter.
Any advice would be appreciated.

well first you have to look at the sixe of the gear. i bet the 8 tooth gear is smaller than the 11 tooth. if thats true then all that it will effect is how fast it spins. the body of the starter might be smaller on the 11 tooth. if the gears are the smae size then that means the the teeth on the flywheel are farther apart then what the 11 teeth starter can do.

The starter will work as-is.

I didn't think it would work, but everyone told me it'd work. I was sitting there looking at the dead 11-tooth starter and my live 8-tooth starter and thinking, no, this *can't* be a direct swap.

But it is.

The 8-tooth has a nice geary whine, but the 11-tooth sounds prissy like an FC. But really as long as it works that's all that counts.

the 8 tooth gear is smaller in diameter but the distance between the teeth are the same.
So It will work then?
Then why the hell was it just clicking.....?? I figured it was clicking because it was jamming!

Check your ground wire. My starter just clicked when I forgot to hook up the ground.

All '74-91 non turbo rotaries (possible exception of the REPU) have the same diameter flywheel, same starter dimensions, same starter placement. It's not jamming.

It might be clicking because the solenoid contacts are worn out. Turn the interior dome light on and see what happens when you try to start... if the light stays the same brightness, the solenoid is burnt and needs rebuilt. If the light dims, then you need to look into a new starter or check the battery or cables/clamps. Also make sure the engine can turn freely.

Hey mmasid what ground are you talking about anyways?
Hey peejay, the engine turns freeely and I just got the starter used and the guy says it worked. I will try and see if the interior light dims too, sometime this week.
I am thinking that maybe I will run a new ground off the battery to the shock tower or where ever it is located (my main ground is prettty much new). My positive starter wire is also prettty much new and in great shape.
Lets just say that my starter is good, battery good, all connections to and from battery good, what else can it be?

If the starter is good, and the battery is good, and all the connections to and from the battery are good, and the engine turns freely... *there are no problems*.

But clearly you have a problem, so at least one of those things is NOT good.

The REPU flywheel is different, but it takes the same starter. 11 tooth or 8 tooth.
