1st Gen Engine Swaps?

Hey everybody,

I was wondering would it be possible to fit a 3G RX7 motor into a first gen? I've heard that you can swap a 2G turbo motor in there but what about 3G motors?

also is there a specific year 1st Gen that would make a 3G or 2G swap easier?

I've done a search but I didn't find all the info I was looking for. I was thinking about all the things I would need for this project.

-3G or 2G turbo motor, ECU, wiring, manual tranny
-Axles? (can I use one from a 3G or 2G?)
-Rear Brakes?
-radiator, different IC, IC piping?
-motor mounts?, (can I use stock mounts or do I have to fab. some up?)
-custom exhaust
-am I missing anything?

I would just be doing basic BPU's to the engine, nothing fancy. I would also be getting the proper fuel upgrades (standalone, injectors, etc) to prevent leaning out the motor. The Turbo(s) would remain stock but everything else would be replaced with upgraded/higher quality parts. Does anyone also know of any good online sources about this swap as well? something like a walkthrough or a review of this swap?

Thanks

do a search for 13rew swap or 13bt there is a weekly thread on this type of swap. few things though, you cant use 2nd gen or 3rd gen axles in a 1st gen cuase we have a soild rear not irs. i dont know about using the 3rd gen's turbos though seems like to much space and wiring to get them to work. a 89-91 would work alot better if your keeping it relitivly stock

What's a 2G or 3G? If by 3G you mean 13G engine, well if you have enough money to buy one (upwards of $20k just for the bare block, no manifolds/oil pump/engine management, call Mazda Comp and have a platiunum card and/or a spare kidney ready) then swapping one into a 1st-gen should be no problem at all...

I think you may have more work than you think by doing that.

By 2G and 3G I meant, 2nd Generation RX7, 3rd Generation RX7 (FC and FD).

Talking 3rd gen swap

no. I will take it when the track opens in January/ Febuary. Its a3rd gen block or 13b-rew. Changed the front cover to fit in 1st gen. Ported and built by Perry @ Rotary Performance in Florida

Ohhh... that's cool! so you're saying you have an FD motor crammed in there? was it very difficult to fit in there? where did you go to find out all your info? what axles, brakes, tranny did you use? what's your favorite color? whats your shoe size?

nah seriously though I would much rather have a 3G(FD) motor swap than the 2G(FC) motor swap. BTW did you retain the stock twins on there?

Thanks

The stock twins won't fit without a LOT of hacking. I tink it's been done before, but why bother? The turbos are way tiny and restrict horsepower.

An SA/FB only weighs 2400 or so lounds stock, even less once you take out a lil' deadweight. Believe me, a stock Series 6 (89-91) T2 engine will be quite sufficient. If you're going for the Big Power then an FD engine might be a better choice because the blocks can withstand more power (FC engines only good to about 350-400hp unless you're very very careful with your tuning, and build the engine well) but they're more expensive. You're going to be throwing away the turbo setup and stock computer, etc anyway, so an extra $500 is nothing compared to the cost of the computer, turbo setup, and tuning.

So... if you want a drop in swap, get a T2 drivetrain (I wouldn't trust the non-turbo trans...) and it's almost a direct bolt in, but you'll need a different front cover, engine mount plate, oil pan, and you'll need to have a driveshaft made. (About $400 or so locally, from all new parts). Don't bother with the FD stuff as it's too complex and problematic unless you're planning on getting a standalone computer, single turbo upgrade, etc.
