1st gen alternator problems

Replaced my alt on a 1st gen, but the engine won't shut off unless I pull the plug from the back of the alt. Amp meter shows alt to be charging. Any help?

You may have crossed some wires reinstalling it.

So you have an SA and installed an internally regulated alt?

Give more info. Year, engine and what part. Need to double check it's the right part. Pic would be nice too.

You either plugged in the wrong T connector or the body of the alt isn't grounding to the engine.

u pluged in the wrong connector .....i had the same problem before

Make sure the new alternator carries that T-clip on the back. If it doesnt it isnt the right one. Autozone tried to do the same thing to me.

The alt is in an 84' with an internal regulator. When I install an eairler alt w/o internal regulator, it overcharges but will turn off with ignition off. Have tried 3 other used alts with internal regulators and they all do the same thing. The T plug is plugged in correctly because I can see it charging on the amp meter.

Then you need to clean up the mounting ears for a better ground. Also check the other engine grounds. The main one through the battery cable and there should be one going from the top/rear of the engine to the firewall.

the main one goes down by the starter bolt.

I removed it from there and put it on the AC studs so I could keep a better eye on it.
