1983 rx7 - some questions

I got my RX7 over 10 years ago, and the guy who I bought it from did some mods to it. At 142k, I haven't driven it that much; but it's going back on the road next week.

First of all, I'm not 100% sure of the model. Either GSE, GSL, or GSE-SL (?). It has power windows, cruise, power side-mirrors, power gas tank door, and a fairly good speaker system with a "sound joystick". The door locks are manual.

Second question... I don't know if the interior is Tan or Brown, and I need to purchase a part for the passenger door. If the exterior color is any indication, it looks like this:

http://my7.rx-7.org/images/VixensRx7_small.jpg

Any guesses?

Third question... I have never seen this in any RX7 pics I've looked at, but mine has rubber doo-dads on the bumper in front of each headlight. Basically they spray a jet of windshield washer fluid at the headlight. Does anyone else have this? I'm missing the right one and have an email in at Mazdatrix.com... but I wonder if this is some abnormal mod.

Fourth question... the original owner put in a Racing Beat carb system (a De Lorto). What's the general consensus on this set up? I've heard of Nikki systems as well. It runs fine, but once the air temp drops to around 5 degrees celcius I have a hell of a time starting it. Therefore it has only ever been a summer car (which is fine by me). The "air filter" is also something I'd like to replace because some mice got at it (it basically wraps around a wire mesh on the front of the throats)... but I have a feeling I'll never find something like this even at racing beat.

Last question... how can I squeeze a bit more performance out of it? I've driven quite a few cars since the RX, and although it does go fairly fast it really feels like a "heavy" car to me. Not sure why. Would a performance exhaust system pep it up a bit?

Thanks in advance,

...

Well, after I started the car for the first time in 3 years I guess I blew the mouse nest away. However, since the mice used my air-filter to build it, that means I'm out some chunks of air-filter

To help clarify your questions and to determine what model you have. Does yours have the same wheels as the ones your picture?

This will help decide what route to go. Or does it have the same wheels as in in my signature?

The car is at the garage right now, but I'm 100% sure the wheels do not look like your 85. They look more like the one I linked (the 4 spoke look).

I can post again tomorrow when I get the car back, but I'm pretty sure that's the way it is.

BTW, that is the exact color of the exterior (gold? copper?).

1. Probably a GSL

2. Which door part do you need?

3. I believe everyone but the US got those squirters.

4. The Dellortos are a nice setup, but I don't think they have a choke. Thats why its so hard to start in the cold. Try this for an air filter: http://www.racingbeat.com/resultset....rtNumber=16515

5. If you are still running the stock exhaust with that big carb, putting a nice free flow setup on will REALLY wake it up.

The Tan in this car is fairly light, so unless it is really TAN, it is probably a brown interior, although I have seen more tan interiors in the bronze rx7's than brown... It is most likely a GSL. If you have the power windows and all that other jazz, and it is an 83, it won't be a GS. Also, in 83, they didn't have a GSL-SE yet, and unless it is silver, it won't be a limited edition. As far as the Carb goes, I agree with Felix, with a big carb like that, a freeflow exhaust should do well. I would go with a Racing Beat, but that's just me. As far as the headlight washers, that is one of two things... Either a non-american model, or someone modified it with non-american parts to put that feature in. Honestly, it's pretty useless.

Nope, they do in fact have a choke. I know because I got to McGuiver some bike hardware to hook mine up

The Dell's do have problems with icing up under low temp conditions. They aren't a carb for cold weather. However, their power potential, adjustibility and amazing sound more than make up for that

As for the air filter, you can still get the blue foam ones from RB, or (since they suck) you can also get a K&N one. As well, check out cbperformance.com - they sell a K&N style filter assembly that will fit, in addition to all kinds of parts for your Dellorto (rebuild kits).

Have a look at this webpage for a ton of Dell info:

www.gruntled.com

As for exhaust, if you aren't running a low restriction header setup you aren't getting anything near what that Dell will put out. Definitely make sure you have an adequate exhaust and I guarantee you will be quite happy with the power... RB claims 154 hp with your setup, their exhaust and a 2 degree timing advance. Personally, I'm pretty happy with this, and it certainly does not feel heavy or slow or anything of the sort lol.

Have fun!

Awesome info guys, thanks.

Sounds like the headlight squirter mystery has been solved. Since I'm a Canuck, that would explain it.

The door part I need is the interior door-handle (not the lever to open the door, but the one to pull it shut near the armrest). It snapped off at one anchor point. I haven't really looked at it much but maybe I can fix it.

My system does have a choke, and it works. With it out you can hear me coming from a block away

Now that I think back to the day I bought the vehicle, I recall the guy saying something about a stainless steel exhaust he put in there. But I also remember putting a normal muffler on it years later (probably not a good idea). Since he was working on a few Porches in the same garage, I have to imagine he would have done the exahust properly to match the carb. I found out there is a RB dealer in Calgary so I might just take it there and get them to have a look at it.

To be honest I don't know a heck-of-a-lot about headers, and exhaust systems so if anyone can post a link to what they think would be a good set-up I'd appreciate it. I surfed over at RB in the exhaust section a bit.

As for the color, I think I'll take some photos and post them on the net in the next week. That way I can get some more feedback.

Thanks,

Thanks.

I had another look at the interior today. It's gotta be brown. I must have been looking at it in bright sunlight to think it was even close to tan.

Anyway, I got the car back from the garage today and finally got it registered/insured for this province Even got my brand-new set of Yokohama A-509s put on, and man what a nice ride it is. And the cool part: my weekly commute to work for the next 4 months will be 20km on a 110k highway

can you get us pics? If you post pics of the car and the parts we can tell you what they are.

I didn't do anything as elaborate as making my own cable... I already had the Nikki cable/**** setup on my car. What I didn't have was the bracket that RB provides to hook the cable up to the carb. All I did was go to a bike shop and showed the tech guy there what I needed - the part I'm talking about is the little threaded piece that fits into the hole on the carb, and that the threaded part of the choke cable screws into. You secure the end of the choke cable into the stock (not RB) bracket that comes with the Dell.

Sorry if this is a bad description... it's easy for me to picture this stuff but hard to describe in words. Unfortunately I don't have access to a digicam so I can't show you pics. Have a look at that gruntled site though, there could be some pics on there that would help you figure it out.

If you don't want to shell out $$ for a digital-camera, you might want to look at a cheap scanner. After I bought mine I realized I had tons of old pics I wanted to scan for archive, and it's come in pretty handy.

I was also surprised at the scanner quality, since I'm a fairly avid photographer. You can see my scanner in action here (non-auto related):

Very nice pics!! Man that climbing stuff is just so sick... I'd love to get into that someday. I think I gotta move somewhere with hills to climb...

Thanks for the tip, but I'm a broke undergrad student who's studying for LSATs, not working, already has way too much electronics for his own good and really shouldn't have just invested in any of this car stuff lol... I can barely afford gas (the Dell sucks it down like a **** compared to the Nikki). Someday...

Heh, climbing can get pretty sick, but I'm a safety freak so I never really hang it out there. I've only had one epic, although climbing the NE ridge of the Grand Teton in Wyoming scared the crap out of me the entire time.

I used to live in Winnipeg, so I recall that you guys in Ontario have some pretty decent rock -- out west I think. Unfortunately I cut my teeth on the suberb rock in the american mid-west (granite and sandstone) so the rockies out here near Calgary are a bit of a downer (pretty crappy limestone). If you decide to get into it, make sure you have a knowlegable climbing partner and take a quick course at a climbing gym to learn the basics.

As to the Dellorto sucking gas, I know all about it... although I just got mine on the road after 5 years so the reality hasn't kicked in yet

As for photos, there's nothing better than a polarizer lens for reflective surfaces (like cars )
