NC 1982 rx7 Rough idle but wont die please help

hello all! so i just purchased my first rotary and its a 1982 rx7 gsl 5 speed. i got the car with a rebuilt carb new fuel filter new spark plugs with wires and distributor and oil filter. ive been playing with the car for the past 2 days and ive been getting much closer to success but my only problem now is that the car will run perfectly fine and will start up no problems/wont die and around 800 rpms and if i give it gas the rpms will go up slowish but sometimes fast depends when im playing with the timing on the distributor but the real problem is when i give it gas itll cut out around 3k rpm but then still go up and if i hold it at like any rpm it will sputter at it. the car idles like its miss firing almost! ive basically checked for everything all the vacuum hoses look new and i know the timing is atleast around factory settings because i put the leading on the pin and put the distributor in the stock way and if i turn it counter clockwise the rpms will drop and itll idle softer but like it will die and if i put it all the way clockwise it will run much faster but still like a fast missfire! please somebody help me. and also one of the terminals on the distributor cap got a little bent but i bent it back and it seems normal now i dont think thats the problem though.

The fact that its came with what the owner claimed was a rebuilt carb is a huge hint at where
the issues may be. I would start from the tank and work forward.

1. Make sure the tank is clean and not picking up debris or full of gunk. May want to drop it
and give it a good inspection.

2. Replace the fuel filter and all the rubber hoses. The old hoses may be adding particulate in
past the filter and it may be clogging the carb. I small cylindrical glass see through filter right
before the carb may help out as well.

3. Make sure the pump is healthy and producing the volume and pressure the carb needs.
Look in the FSM for details.

4. Pull the carb and clean it up, will want to get a good rebuild kit. Don't change the needles or
seats and don't mess with the floats if they are at the right point now in the sight glass.

I doubt its your timing or ignition at this point.

thanks for the reply but i dont think its any of those it has a brand new fuel filter on it also and i just took the spark plugs out and they were black and i got them new 2 days ago...so i cleaned them and put them in and played with the trailing on the distributor and it idles somewhat smoothly now but still when i give it gas it will only go up slowly but not like slow definitely slower than normal because when i cranked the distributor all the way counter clockwise and i run in the car and floor it then the rpms go up real smooth then i cant rev it again like that so do you think the distributor is of by a tooth?

Check the timing using a timing light don't just adjust the timing at random. Also make sure that you are getting spark out of both you leading and trailing plugs a bad leading ignitor can cause those symptoms. And don't rule out a bad carb just because of a rebuild I've rebuilt plenty of carbs just because they were rebuilt .

it seemed to help me that the water treatment trick helped me a little bit for my reving and stuttering because i noticed my spark plugs would foul and get black after a few minutes

edit: it might of helped a tab bit but itll still stutter for a second when i give it gas but if i floor it a few times it wont stutter when im giving it gas

also im im pretty sure the intake manifold gasket is bad because i got smoke coming from that area that smells a little gassy and its eye burning so do you think that little vacuum leak could cause the sputtering and non even idle?
