1980 questions
just wondering if the 1980 series 1 had electric windows/mirrors etc?
and did it come with factory fitted a/c?
also.. how hard is it to put in a sun roof?
(and why is it called a moonroof?)
-Cheers

it had factoyr a/c as an option and it did have power mirrors on the gs and optional on the s. any body shop or sunroof specialist can put an aftermarket sunroof in for you. the rx-7 did not come with power windows until 1981.
its called a moon roof because most of them didn't have glass, but a metal cover. so if its a sun roof = you can see the sun through. if its a moon roof = you can't see sun through.

I put electric windows in my '81 out of an '83 with no problem.
Not sure if the '80 door frame is different though.
Plus you'd have to do the wiring and find a place for switches (if they didn't fit in the stock location-- I've never seen that part of an SA close up.)

The ashtray is where the stock window switches are on S2/S3.
I dunno about Australia, but no RX-7s came "from the factory" with A/C in the US, except for the GSL-SE, possibly GSL. If A/C was optional for a model, then Mazda made the cars without A/C (for manufacturing consistency) and the A/C was installed either at the port of entry or at the dealership.

That's odd, I leave my factory sunroof up all the time and myu interior doesn't get wet. It's only when it's snowing out that I get snow in the car... and that's only because I forget to close the sunroof before I brush the car off, or if I don't brush the roof off, when I get rolling the air pressure above the car pushes snow into the car down the back of my neck. (Go on and explain *those* aerodynamics, because I sure as hell can't!)
Why in the hell would you have your sunroof open in the winter. Wait, never mind, I'll probably get a stupid answer.
But seriously, any kind of roof altering mods should be left alone. I just can't bring myself to do something like install a sunroof in a car that did not have one. It is most likely going to leak because it wouldn't be as good of a job as the factory could do.

Here's your stupid answer: So i can get in when the doors and hatch freeze shut.
Plus it saves thieves the trouble of breaking the sunroof. The local vandals already know that you can pop into a 1st-gen by prying the sunroof up and breaking the clips. If they're going to get into my car anyway, at least I'd like it done with minimal damage to my car.

"Sunroof is the generic term used to describe an operable panel in a vehicle roof which can let in light and/or air. Moonroof is a term created by Ford in the 70's, yet is now used generically to describe glass panel inbuilt electric sunroofs."

I've always thought of it as a moonroof you can have it closed when its cold at night but still be able to see the moon.

Well- ACKtually, the japanese Limited version 1980 came with power windows. The switches were located on the doors. The easiest way to add them to your car would be to get a pair of 81+ doors with the power bit inside already. The car body has the hole needed to run the wires from the door to the interior of the car. I would get as much of the car-side of the wire harness off the donor car as you can since you will need to rig your own harness.
Mirrors: the electric ones will bolt, mechanically right on to the car BUT:
early production 80 RX7s did not have the hole in the door to run the door wire harness up into the mirror assembly. This problem would also be alleviated with newer doors. You can check your car by pulling one of the mirrors and see if the hole is there.
The next problem is running the mirrors to a switch. The 81+ mirrror switch cannot be (easily) mounted in the Series 1 car because the dash (left of steering wheel) isn't shaped for it nor is there a cut-out behind it in the metal substructure to permit easily creating a mount point. 80's that came with the power mirrors (the LS, for example), used a double-joy-stick control that mounted UNDER the left dash area in a depression below the hatch release. Note that some 80's HAVE this depression, some don't! Its a specific decorative panel... AND you need to find those joy-stick-switches! and they are kinda rare unfortunately...
