1979 SA voltage regulator differences

Less than a year ago I purchase the voltage regulator from Atkins to replace the one in my 1979 SA. It came with all three plugs, including the A-12 shown in the Haynes manual. It failed I believe because the add coolant light wouldn't go out (coolant is topped up, engine just got rebuilt) and the tach kept switching to a volt meter. When it was in volt meter mode it always showed between 13 to 14 volts, and it's a brand new alternator.

I bought this one from rockauto and replaced my previous one and everything seems to work and the add coolant light went out. The rockauto one doesn't have the A-12 connector though. Do I need this connector? I've searched and seen some come with it and some don't. Is there any danger in running without the A-12? The diagram shows it going to the choke relay.

I've run the rockauto regulator since the beginning with no issues until currently, but I don't believe it is the regulator, so I don't think the extra connector is necessary.

What's crazy is these regulators used to be 20 dollars or something...

I also deal with a regulator and I'm looking to remove the whole system and upgrade to the FC alternatortup.

Here is a really good thread on it.

Let me know if you go this route, because it seems it hasn't been done in a while recently and I'd like to see a success story.

I'm thinking about going that route next time. The regulators are $100 each and my last new one only lasted 6 months.
