16.7, and the question is...

how many gallons does the tank on my 85GSL hold?

Coasted into the gas station dead empty.

I bring this up because some guy was bragging he put a 17 gal tank from a chevy, or somethin'.

Last time I rolled into the gas station with the fuel pump rattling (the 5 minute warning that I'm out of gas, carbs are *neat* that way) and filled it up, it took 16.75 gallons. At $1.79 per. The gas was payment for a brake jon I did...

I ran the '80 dry once. Took one gallon from the can and 12.5 at the pump, minus a quart or so used in physically getting from the side of the road to the gas station.

Incidentally, Mazda went to a space-saver spare in the '81-85 models so they could increase the fuel capacity. The FB has a much shallower spare tire well than the SA, which came from the factory with a full-size spare (on an aluminum rim if the car was so equipped!). The upshot is that you can put an SA tank into an FB, but you can't put an FB tank into an SA unless you remove the spare tire well and weld in an FB well (if you want a spare tire). Naturally, the SA tank is discontinued and no longer available.

For what it's worth, the CD Cosmo has a 16.9 gallon tank. I would assume it's the same tank the RX-4 had (parts bin goodness).

6.1 total, 4.8 with an oil/filter change. That means one and a quarter quarts stays in the rotors and oil cooler, and a little bit in the passages.
