Ah, I guess that makes sense, as my project is to drop a complete Renesis engine, computer, etc into my GSL-SE...

Mazda Canada is being weird about the engines. They don't want 'em on the street before the RX-8 comes out.

There's a white Series 2 or 3 RX-7 with FD mechanicals kicking around - seems like a pretty good plan B, though as much as I love the FB svelte body a complete FD is a siren song unto itself...

I want a Turbo FB, a 20B FC Vert, and a late, late model FD.

I gotta have one of each in the long run.
The 20B FC Vert is an achievable goal. $39,900, and it's yours. I'll consider taking a trade-in.

BTW, George Samuels has the RXX-7 (white FC 'vert with a 20B) for sale. To my knowledge it is the only completed 20B 'vert project in the world. And he ONLY wants something around $40K for it. Maybe he could be talked down to a more reasonable $30K. I hear there is some crazy Canadian trying his hand at the project now too...
He could not be talked down. The car was originally priced at $55,000, which was a fair price for the performance, quality and uniqueness. If I didnt have to pay for 4 kids in college, I wouldn't sell at all.

$40K will put the youngest through school. If I can't achieve that by selling the car, I'll just grit my teeth and keep the car. Gritting one's teeth is much easier in the context of a 20B-assisted grin.

I'll bet it is.

You find yourself in the same situation that I know many people occupying. You never get what you want for a modded car. Better anchor in for the "B Plan".

People seem to like playing the "name that price" game with modded cars though. "What's my ______ with a _____ and a ______ worth?" One of my personal favorites is "when you car is finished ('90 TII engine and T-60-1 turbo in a '85 GSL-SE), how much would you take for it?" Like I just spent a year and several thousand dollars to give the car away. My labor is worth nothing. If I tell them they can have the car for a mere $20K, they suddenly are no longer interested in having a turbo 1st gen.

20B swaps are getting more common by the day. There's even a forum on here just for the 20B heads. I know of 4 of them in Minnesota alone, although none into a 'vert (3x FDs, and 1x FC). Like I said, yours is the only completed 20B 'vert I am aware of.

You can buy a 13bt from www.fc3s.com around $ 750.00 dollors. Along with other engines that are
j-spec imported from japan. A good place to start.

Yeah a series 5 is usaually around 750.. a series 4 i have seen as low as $550..

And a swap (cost of parts) usually runs close to $10K.. I have about $8K into mine.. but i have pretty much everything.

Rebuilt S5 13BT
ACT PP& 4 puck clutch
3rd gen Flywheel
SFP Manifold
T04E Turbo
Haltech E6K
SX FPR /w gauge
Bosch pump
2x550 TII injectors
2x1680 (160lbs) injectors
NPR Intercooler
Griffen Radiator
TII Tranny
Custom Driveshaft
Greddy Elbow /w flange
Greddy Type-R BOV
3rd gen upper intake & TB

And then you get to add all the little things. Which add up quick!

I think i have about $400 into just AN fittings for the fuel system.

Now, after i get it running and tuned i need to pick up a ford 9" and a new turbo

My "poor man's project car", the ResurreXion-7, is pretty much the same as yours, except that I'm using an '87 T-II motor. I agree with you about the lack of appreciation for the labor involved.

I don't know how the laws are where you are, but in the US, that would mean that the GSL-SE would be considered a 2003 model emissions-wise. That means you'd have to install EVERYTHING to make it legal - special fuel tank, the RX-8 converters and exhaust manifold, all of the special sensors, RX-8 transmission and axle ratio, etc. EVERYTHING.

And then it would be illegal to modify it unless you're using certified parts.

No thanks... I'll just wait for 1st-gens to be over 25 years old and then I'll go bridge port. Over 25 and emissions is exempt

Or - you could live in Florida and not worry about emmissions inspections - or state income tax for that matter.

We used to have emissions testing in several counties (mine included) and I just registered my previous SE's in another county to avoid the headaches.

Not that a $20 handshake wouldn't work either...

ok I wanted to chime in here.. I understand why you guys have spent that much.. between the haltach and turbo, it's gonna be one bad *** car! but.. say you had a running(but POS) TII and a 1st gen roller.. would you have everything you needed to make the 1st gen turbocharged? If so, you could do it around $1000-$1500.. again it won't have the finesse that some of these other cars have.

You should have enough. Minus a couple of custom gadgets you will come across the need for, like the tranny mount, and drive shaft yoke... Of course you will be stuck with the stock turbo and ECU. Then there are always a bunch of things you didn't consider before, like new belts, plugs, mount rubbers, injector cleaning, silicone hose replacements, and so on.

It's not a job to be lightly entered into. Unless you've done it before, and like the punishment.

Check this thread for more info.

I am quite sure if I added up my receipts over the past 3 years, it would come up to near enough to 60k AUS....

Heh - here if it has 4 wheels and headslights you can plate it, and registration, etc. goes by chassis not engine. A Chevette with an LT1 would still be a Chevette.

BTW why wouldn't I use the Renesis exhaust manifold? the ports are in the wrong place to use a 1985 13B one.Same goes for tranny, etc. Bolting a renesis to a stock tranny is like that fictional guy who allegedly bolted JATO jet engines to his trunk to go faster. You can do it, but - why?

Some people just seem to have trouble getting their head around using the Series 3 monocoque (unibody to you Americans) to mount a 3rd gen or RX-8 drivetrain.

Jim that sums it up perfectly! You HAVE to like the punishment of doing what we are doing in our garages to get through this. I have my days or even weeks at times where I just don't even want to think about the car or even go out to the garage. But then some days I get all pumped and go out there and get 1 or 2 things done and makes me feel good. I totaly agree.

I'll chime in here too, it realy really sucks trying to find the time with doing a swap like this. Being a single parent of a 4 year old boy, working full time plus god knows who is gonna show up here and want something installed for cash... Its really frustarting, especially when you get involved in doing something and then you go damn I need this now, and guess what its 1 am and you go aint no one open, so you just lost that nite. Only to have to wait like a couple weeks for another day to work on it...I know you guys can relate to this... But this IS NOT A CHEAP deal and it is very time consuming. I think tho if I had every single part that I would need right there, I could do it in a week or 2... I bet your *** if I was doing it for someone else I wouldnt quote a labor price Id say 'how much ya wanna spend' and Ill stop at that point.. LOL
