13B Twin turbo swap??

I have an 81 RX-7. I was curious if anyone has done the 13B twin turbo swap. If so how hard is it? If not is it even possible? Oh BTW if anyone wants or needs a B13 Turbo, I can get them for $750. Thank you for any and all information.

hmm.. either search or look up at the top of the posts all the info you could need and them some more.. look b4 ya post plz..

jeremy 07-25-02 01:34 AM

yeah, we'll let you slide since you're new. :) there are a lot of cosmo swaps going on right now and have been quite a few tII swaps. just look at the sticky and search.

As mentioned above there are numerous threads on this subject. The two approaces are transplanting the Gen3 RX7 or the slightly easier Cosmo twin turbo engines.

A good approach is to read through all the posts of Mike-P-28 who describes in detail what it takes to fit a Cosmo engine, and the total time and cost involved.

Sorry, add to that the requirements to transplant a 13b into a 12a model which entails several stuctural changes plus a high pressure fuel pump and line. Most people start with the 84/85 13b gsl-se due in part to better brakes and a lsd.

I wished I started with a -SE :)

Would have been a lot better off :)

Yea but Mike your getting the perfect sleeper man and only having to sacrafice an arm, leg and possibly some internal organs to pay for it.

Actually Ive did quite well, only used my credit card once ($210 from Racing Beat for the exhaust flanges, downpipe etc) everything else has been cash :) So im doing pretty good. Im afraid to add everything up... :)

NOTA V6 07-25-02 12:17 PM

Car addict rule #1:

:nono: NEVER EVER add up the receipts. :nono:

I have even taken care on my site not to keep a running total on the whole car, but just on what it would take to swap a TII engine and tranny into a GSL-SE. I don't even count things that should be gone through or updated, like the clutch, injector cleaning, etc. ;)

I still have all the receipts back to when I bought the car. Inquiring minds really don't want to know. :D

MIKE-P-28 07-25-02 12:31 PM

True so very true, I know that im way beyong 6k :( I had 6000 saved up, and its now gone :(

Take note people this IS NOT CHEAP!

MIKE-P-28 07-25-02 12:33 PM

By the way lets not forget about the others doing this too. Setzep and Directfreak, rx7passion with his 13bt...

I cant be the show stealer :) LOL

damon 07-25-02 02:01 PM

I thought that direct freak was doing the cosmo swap?

Oh well thats what I get for thinking.

peace

Yeah he is, take note of the grammer, in particular the comma and come back and see if you see who is doing the 13bt :D (Damn what a smart ass I am LOL )

abeomid 07-25-02 02:14 PM

Actually just for fun, I started adding up the receipts, (I have everything beside IC, Haltech, Injectors, Fuel pump) and I almost passed out looking at what i've paid. SO PLEASE DON'T BOTHER ADDING UP THE COST B/C IT'S TOO MUCH. but i think it's well worth it at the end.

Remember that it's always will be way more than what you think it will cost.

To do a good job and doing most of the work your self, you should be looking at around 7-10G

Oh no, dammit you mean its that much LOL :( LOL

rx7passion 07-25-02 07:06 PM

hehe i dont want to know how much i have spent, but like mike i havnt put any of it on credit. all been cash from paychecks. now even toying with a upgraded to4 setup i cringe

PaulFitzwarryne 07-25-02 07:16 PM

Do you think it would be cheaper to have started with a FD and substituted a FB body, I believe you can pick up good bodies for $500.

Manntis 07-25-02 07:29 PM

If you start with an FD, why not just keep it as an FD?

NOTA V6 07-25-02 08:49 PM

It kinda detracts from the unique and sleeper qualities. ;)

I want an FD too, not instead of a turbo FB. It's a state of mind that is hard to explain. The FD and FC turbo guys think it's envy. I think it's making up for the way Mazda should have been making them all along. :D

I couldn't have said it better.

I want a Turbo FB, a 20B FC Vert, and a late, late model FD.

I gotta have one of each in the long run.:D

Directfreak 07-25-02 11:44 PM

By the way, I HAVE added the receipts, an even broken the whole thing down to the dollar.

There are two correct answers.

      LOL!

      I told you! :D

BTW, George Samuels has the RXX-7 (white FC 'vert with a 20B) for sale. To my knowledge it is the only completed 20B 'vert project in the world. And he ONLY wants something around $40K for it. Maybe he could be talked down to a more reasonable $30K. ;) I hear there is some crazy Canadian trying his hand at the project now too...

LOL :) Hey guys add another $300 to mine :D

Just picked up some more goodies :)

      peejay 07-26-02 05:45 PM

      Baaaahhhhhhh....

Someone give me a car, an engine, a prybar, a hammer, some duct tape, and my MIG. Then we'll see how much an engine swap costs :D

      PaulFitzwarryne 07-26-02 06:01 PM

Manntis- it would appear the aim of so many people on this forum is get a car which has a FB body and FD engine and mechaniicals.

What I was suggesting was why not start with the FD and change the body, rather than as people have been doing is starting with a FB and changing the engine. We could start a whole new thread on how to do it!

I don't want a FD, however the new Z350 is looking great and may be my next purchase when the convertible comes out. I think Mazda is going the wrong way with the RX-8, even the rotary does not save it.

I will stick with the SA as my personality car.
