are spark plug wires universal? can I use the kit from summit racing ? will autozone splice the connections or do I have to buy +$100 crimping tool ?

 

Spark plug wires are generally "not" universal due to the "core resistance" of the spark plug wire and connector which are based on your engines specific ignition system if I remember correctly.

I recall @t_g_farrell 's extensive work on this showed that there could be a breakup of ignition timing stability at 5K rpm depending on the polarity of the reluctor output to the HEI ignitor and the year of the dizzy. I think it had to do with the shape of the reluctor and the resulting attack/decay of the waveform.

A quick test would be to reverse the polarity of the signal wires from the dizzy to the W and G HEI pins and see if you get better performance above 5K.

If you do direct fire using HEI modules and an SA (80 model year) dizzy then it will not perform as well and will break up at higher rpms. I had to get an FB dizzy which generates a better waveform to signal the HEI with. What year is your car or dizzy @midnight mechanic ?

Also, high quality universal spark plug kits will work great and when doing direct fire you usually need to use them anyway to get the lengths of the wires to reach the leading coils. They usually come with a small block to fasten the ends on which can be pressed with a vice or some channel locks. I've done it both ways in the past.

 

1983 ? that was rebuilt after a fiery wreck before I bought it. Wires were from 1982, rims have different dates on them. Who knows what it is !

Autozone locally has the ACCELL 4041 or I can get it 1/2 price at summit racing. I hate going in there to check the sparkplug fit, then buy it someplace else.

raven, those cost $130 ! ! I would accuse you of marketing, but you've had 8 years of helpful posts here. $130 ? Least it takes away the shame of blowing $75 on the ACCEL 4041 (Autozone).

 

I think the set I used was ACCEL but I would have to pull the box and look. Its been decades since I did it originally.

 

If they weren’t good I wouldn’t post them…..like I said I had them on my 82 and I’m using them on my AE86….they are worth every penny…..
