And in other news - my shiney new alu radiator fund just turned into a shiney new windshield fund!!!



This windshield was toast anyways - SUPER scratched up. Even driving during the day the sunlight would catch and spread across the glass. So actually a blessing in disguise. New glass + new headlights = actually being able to see at night! Woot!

I ground mine down with the bench grinder... then road tested... then ground off some more... then road tested etc untill I was satisfied with the transition from primary to secondary.

Before I did that I just wired it open all the time, but with it working correctly it does make the transistion smoother. No where near as smooth as the rats nest makes it, but untill someone makes a nikki manifold for the 13B I guess I'm stuck with what I've got.

Today I discovered that although the S4 alternator is plug-compatible with the SA wiring, the spacer and pivot bolt required to mount it both need to be shorter.

Mounting extrusion on the water pump is 55mm thick.

The SA alt has an 80mm inner mounting gap (with a floating sleeve), and uses a 25mm-long spacer (ID 10mm, OD 20mm) and a 115mm long bolt (threaded for 35mm at the end) for the lower attachment.

The S4 alt has a mounting gap of ~66.35mm max (with a floating sleeve) and therefore needs a spacer only 10-11mm long, and ideally would have a 105mm bolt.



I have a stack of high-strength washers that could do the trick, except that they are just under 2mm thick each, a sack of 5 is not quite long enough, but 6 is too long.

So I either have to find the right spacer, or lap one of these washers. & I still have 10mm of extra bolt thread sticking out the rear, which doesn't look quite right. I'm guessing that flange head shouldered bolt might be a bit hard to come by.

how about those super thin washers, trying to think where i've seen them before... OH when i worked in a bike shop. There are many washers that are less than 1mm thick. A few of those should be able to fill in the diff.

Maybe drop by your LBS (local bike shop) and see if they have anything that would fit the bill. I wanna see that thing INSTALLED!

Do the windshields available in the aftermarket have that sun protector tint up at te top like the originals?
My windshield is original to the car and it's riddled with chips, not cracks.

Many times, the tint-strip is an option. Not sure on 7's as I haven't replaced mine (which has the blue shade line) in a lot of years, but on some cars you can buy glass both with and without masked edges or tint strips.

Although I will be hitting the drag strip for fun, its not going to be for a rev limiter or launch control. I'm also not sold on these 2-steps, thinking i might switch out for 2 individual rpm switches. It seems the msd 8739 that I got requires a full MSD igntion - and I have many other things i need to work on first.

My guy has the "OE-style green shade at the top" style. He said its possible i might find other colors if i go through a glass shop, but this is the one he has available. Not sure about the black trim.

Black Dragon sells new glass with black trim and i think green shade at the top. Its $2xx.00 something plus gobs of shipping.

DD, just ask someone on the forum for the correct bolt and spacer. I'd hate to see an ugly stack of washers in such a nice engine bay. Knowing how careful you are, I'd think the correct parts would be a must.

The radiator is finally in. That took way longer than it should because I decided to use a set of pristine 79-80 radiator support parts. My GSL-SE one was rusty and wouldn't lend itself well to a front mount IC which uses round tubing. The GSL-SE CAI hole is oblong 5" x 2.25" or so. So that meant creative trimming of sheet metal to fit around the oil cooler perches and oil cooler lines. But the new rad is in place now.

Next is a waterpump. I should have one in the pile... Do I have hoses?

If I did it that way, you'd never see them... I'd do an overwrap of some kind. Also much easier to install if they are bound together somehow.

This would be an FC "want to buy" though, wouldn't it - - seeing as it's an FC alt spacer I need?

Finally got a nice day so I removed the power antenna from the GSL-EV and installed it on the GSL-SE to replace the rubber ducky antenna the PO had installed. I had fixed the antenna last fall when I discovered a replacement rod I had purchased years ago. It even works! The rubber ducky is on the EV for now. Thinking of doing some sort of hidden antenna anyway and Ill plug the hole in the car when I decide to paint it. Not convinced I need AM/FM anyway because I have XM in it. Is that too many M's in one sentence? Got dark on me but changing out that antenna took longer than I thought. I actually managed to change it out without removing the right rear taillight years ago but I sure wasn't able to do it today.

Anyone have a source for the gasket that goes around the taillight? All of mine are in what I would consider poor condition.

No. Most 83-88 alts use the spacer and bolt in that size you need. I just messed with one today in the brown car. GSL-SE stuff. Same hardware.

Hmm, now I have to ask what in the world would an FC alt be doing in your engine bay? Looking pretty?

Edfit: Oh I see. You did get it in there and it looks ok. Did you use a stack of washers?

XLNT - I still want to get a proper spacer, even if my make-do looks pretty decent.

S4 alt, looking nice but also producing about twice the amperage of the stock SA alt. The 80 alt would norotiously drop in delivered voltage on wet rainy nights, with wipers, lights, and defog fan all going - especially when old and tired as mine is becoming.

The S4 is a direct replacement from an electrical standpoint, & I got a decent deal on a freshly-rebuilt one without having to give up a core. Logical upgrade, especially for a car that sits a lot and thus needs heavy charge current often. Plus, they look a bit less like a coffee can sitting up there on top the engine.


A stack of 10.8-grade washers lapped to fit (180-grit paper on an orbital sander) & bound smoothly with the same blue tape I used for my wiring harness. Coupled with a fresh-from the store 10x110mm plated pivot bolt and flange nut.

The stack will serve until I can locate the proper spacer and paint it.

Ok, makes sense. But if I could make a suggestion... look for the stock bolt and maybe the correct matching nut for the complete package look with a little 6 on the head.
