Turbo II Swap complete... Shakedown runs at Cal Speedway (In Car Video)
Turbo II Swap complete and car running.
A quick breakdown for those that have not followed the build.
1987 T2 Engine
BNR Stage 2 turbo
Haltech Fuel Management
RB Aluminum Flywheel
Custom APEXi exhaust system
Custom fuel system with surge tank and dual fuel pumps
Stock Primaries, GSLSE Secondary injectors
Tuning by RRR in Santa Ana Calif
Car put down 272 HP to the rear tires with 12 PSI boost.
Track only car, significant lightening, autocross, NASA time trial car.
OK... Car ran great all weekend long with no mechanical issues.
I need to either put taller tires on the car or go to a lower (numerically) gear because top speed is limited to about 138-140 MPG because I am hitting the 7500 RPM rev limiter I set in the Haltech. Once you see the video, you can see on the straights that I hit about the 135 range, and then I lift off the throttle to avoid hitting the rev limiter. As you can see, I still have a LOT of straight left to accelerate and the car has the power to continue to accelerate. I think with a little taller tire, I will be able to hit in the 145 to 150 MPH range at California Speedway!!
I am running a 225/45/13 Hoosier right now that is only 20.9 inch tall!!
This whole weekend was just shakedown runs to test the engine. My tires were about 3/4 wore out and have had about 8 race days on them. Sooo... they did not give me quite the grip I wanted. I need to change tires before I go back again. Also now I desperately need brake upgrades. The stock 12a would push the car to about 115 MPH on the straights.... the turbo motor is obviously faster!!
The video shows me taking the first lap easy to let the engine, brakes and tires warm up.... when I hit the straights... notice a Mustang GT trying to pass a slower car and then I pull to the right to pass them both!!! The whole weekend was a blast passing cars with ease!!
A turbo II engine in a first gen is a blast!!!
