SA speaker sizes/ reccomendations
I'm getting the sound system going on my 79 SA, the front speakers look/sound ok, the rear surrounds are toast. measured front and rear and they don't seem like standard sizes like 6-1/2, 5 or 4 inches. any suggestions for decent replacements? or sizes that work?

This might help. All first gen's have the same speaker sizes. The only exception would be the 1979 dash speaker which is unique to a few SAs made in the beginning.

just the rears for now since the fronts are in decent shape, I still need to sort out the wiring because whoever installed the EQ unit just stuck the (lightweight) bare wires into the connectors, so new wiring/connectors are in order.too

Damn, it did start!
Finding speakers is just impossible. The right one that is. I have too much into my car for $30 specials. I’m in small town so “auditioning” is barely an option. I have JBL pro in my home theater but I never see JBL as a go to brand in car audio. Brands I thought were good such as Kicker and Rockford Fosgate get meh reviews. I just want good coaxes. I have been told to get Focals, These are not totally out of budget, but a hard pill to swallow. I did play with Cruchfields simulator with my Sennheisers and did like the Focals . ICU I believe. But if I just pit in a set of Kickers would I have been disappointed? I rip my mind in pieces over stuff like this.

Hah, yeah I'm not overly obsessed with audiophile quality since the car is relatively loud anyway. I always liked JBL for pro audio applications, and home stereo, so I assume their car audio components are adequate at worst or maybe really good. I may eventually re-foam the original speakers. I might go a different direction with the front speakers depending on how I like the JBl's. I used a Pyle woofer when my TV soundbar sub blew and it's pretty impressive, it was cheap but had a big magnet on it and it sounds much better than the original nakamichi sub. so there's that too. I'm more obsessed with using a heavier speaker wire gauge to get the best sound out of whatever I use.

I recently installed some Kickers in the front and rear and I'm pretty happy with them, although they definitely like to be played loud. They do okay at low volumes, but they when cranked up is when they really shine. This is paired with an old Pioneer head unit and a Bazooka tube subwoofer.
While theses Kickers are arguably a budget option, I'm still a fan, especially compared to my old and dying Polk GXR4's. Part numbers are as follows if you want to take a look at them:
- Front: 46CSC44
- Rear: 46CSC654
Beware of deep speakers for the rear, the magnet will hit the wheel well or the front won't clear the stock panels - the above speakers fit perfect. Also a heads up, the included speaker adapters that Crutchfield throws in do not fit, or at least they didn't fit the connectors on my SA. They're the right style, but too big.

That is why I rewire any car that I install a stereo and speakers in...specially on my 7 that is 38 years old...

Front is 4", any 4" will fit.
Rear isn't exactly a standard size but measure the diameter of the cutout and compare to speaker specs. You can fit a 5.25", 6" and most 6.5" speakers but a spacer ring might be needed for certain basket designs.
My suggestion, as always, is to go to Crutchfield website and plug in your year/make/model. They will filter results based on what fits, and will provide harness adapters so you don't have to cut any cables.
